So, looking at Errol Spence's last two fights, a couple of things stood out quite a lot to me.
His defense isn't great
Leonard Bundu was able to catch and counter Errol Spence multiple times throughout their fight. In round 1, Bundu was able to continuously tag Spence on both sides of the face.
This happened because:
- Spence isn't fast
- His reflexes are not great
- He drops his left hand every time he throws a jab
- He doesn't bring his punching hand back to protect
- He moves straight back when hit
- He doesn't move his head!!
Leonard Bundu showed him a few different looks and it confused Spence quite a lot. Spence got hit with straight lefts and because his reflexes aren't great, and moved straight back which allowed Bundu to follow up without much trouble. This happened in the very first round! Go check it out on youtube.
Also, Spence doesn't punch with his opponent. When he fought Chris Algieri he didn't counter Algieri a single time. He tried to on 2-3 occasions, but those counters were wide off the target.
In fact, Algieri hit Spence on the counter, and what happened when he did? Instead of moving, tying up or ducking - He walked straight back, putting the earmuffs on and let Algieri take another punch. He got gunshy after taking punches from Algieri and Bundu.
Not long lasting gunshy, but gunshy enough not to counter or go on the immediate revenge.
You can do this against C/D level fighters like Bundu and Algieri, but against Kell Brook he'll take a lot of jabs straight to the jaw, followed up by a quick right hand that he won't counter because... you guessed it:
He doesn't counter at all! He just gets shy and stops punching.
