Kovalev couldn't "break his arms" in the clinches, and was getting caught backing "straight" out of the clinches. Jackson did not have Kov prepared to fight on the inside! Although I still thought Kovalev won the fight, his lack of an inside game may well have cost him the fight in the judges eyes. Byrd did a good job of letting the fighters fight, and he kept yelling "you're free in there!"

His entire game plan was suspect. He was suckered into chasing Ward instead of cutting the ring-off. He looked ******. That knockdown was probably the worst thing that happened for him because that's all he tried the entire fight afterwards. He wasted way too much time and energy trying to recapture the 2nd round feeling. As a boxer you not only have to forget about bad rounds and readjust but even GOOD rounds you sometimes should forget about them and readjust as well...IMO. He got too C ocky and confident. He's probably still reliving the 2nd round and wondering WTF happened.

Whist I agree it Kovalev looked apprehensive when Ward was coming inside, he knew Ward would hit and work just as hard as himself so tying his opponent up and utilising his weight on Andre's neck would have an effect down the stretch I just felt Kovalev looked slower and more befuddled as the fight progressed into the latter stages as his power wasnt slowing Ward's work.

Great fight, I'm ready for a trilogy. Krusher has met his kryptonite a guy who doesn't wilt under power and pressure only excels and works harder himself.

Andre Ward is a special talent and rightfully THE POUND 4 POUND NO.1, Kovalev runs him an exceptionally close second.

On resume these guys are matched or exceeded by Gonzalez. On the eye test I like Loma and Rigo better. Rigo will never have the resume and Loma is still building his.

That's your opinion but none of them have a victory like Andre Ward does over an absolute destroyer in Kovalev.

Andre is the POUND FOR POUND NO.1., Krusher runs him a close second.

Byrd did an ok job. he still should have broken them up sooner - when a clinch turns into a grappling match after 5 seconds or so - and few if any punches have been thrown, or can be thrown - its time to separate them. Continued grappling means its turning into a competition of strength rather than just boxing.

I recommended a casual friend catch a stream of this. I haven't called him yet since the fight but I know he won't be thanking me.

I expect and hope that Walters-Loma will be a far better spectacle than this was.

Shut the phuck up Duva. I saw the ref break them up at every opportunity, the ref definitely had a great game, the fight could have been more dirty if not for him.

Duva should shut the **** up. If she wasn't so naive she would have known this would happen picking a black referee for a top level title fight involving a black fighter. I'm not saying it always happens, but it happens plenty. Byrd took care of the fighter he viewed as one of his own, I imagine, as dumb as that is. But Duva should have seen it coming after May-Pac.

Wrong. Ward would duck in, grab Kovalev, then try to sneak in body shots and forearms. Ward initiated OFFENSIVE HOLDING. As a defense since the ref was so bad, Kovalev responded with DEFENSIVE HOLDING.

So did Kovalev hold as defense? Yes, but only as defense against WARD INITIATING HOLDING. So no, Kovalev was not "the one" clinching. He was one of two fighters clinching, after WARD initiated clinches. Period. And the ref should have stopped Ward's cheating, then Kovalev wouldn't have had to grab back to defend himself from it.

In the end though all the ref did was make a 10-2 Kovalev win into an 8-4 Kovalev win. The rest is on the judges. It still was an obvious result but they were biased too.
