Comments Thread For: Kovalev Promoter Extremely Disappointed' in Referee Byrd

LAS VEGAS Andre Ward is pleased with the way referee Robert Byrd officiated his victory over Sergey Kovalev. Kathy Duva? Not so much. Kovalev's promoter is displeased because Byrd allowed their highly competitive light heavyweight title fight to become unusually physical and rough Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. When they weren't landing hard jabs and right hands, Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) and Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) spent much of their 36 minutes together clinching, shoving and wrestling one another all over the ring.

Stop Duva. Byrd did a good job last night. Stop with the excuses and start promoting the rematch. This is when i miss Don King. He wouldn't make excuses after his fighter lost a close fight. He'd start selling the rematch at the post fight conference. You got the rematch clause. Let's do it again!!!

Lol...really? Not only did Byrd continually let ward rush in with his head but also don king not make excuses or shout about the referee? Obviously you didn't see his reactions after the Douglas and holyfield fights with Tyson

Byrd was great last night and that's coming from a Kovalev fan, Duva stfu.

Always liked Kathy from her time handling Tomasz Adamek and I'm not opposed to her doing the 'sour g****s' as opposed to Sergey doing it as to build a rematch yet last night the officials nailed it **** on, all of them.

Truth be told I would have felt a draw or maybe even a 114-113 for Kovalev would not have been unfair, again I'll reiterate I felt the right man won though but can understand why Kovalev felt hard done by, it must be noted though Kovalev looked lost for parts of the mid-latter rounds as though he felt his power wasnt ineffectual hence why I favoured Ward when he was putting the hurt on the Russian.

Anybody who has read what Paulie Malignaggi said about the fight knows that's exactly how it played out, he's completely unbiased too.

Referee was fine, Kovalev was immediately headlocking Ward anytime they got close especially early on so it's not like the clinching was one sided.

All I remember is Don King yelling "Let's do it again. Let's do it again". And Kovalev was clinching and holding when Ward would come in with his head down instead of side stepping and countering. This fight was not won or lost due to Byrd. If people are complaing about Byrd's performance last night they'll never be satisfied with any referee. You're complaing about Ward rushing in with his head and she's complaining about holding and clinching when it was her fighter doing the holding and clinching. Both of you are upset with Byrd for opposite reasons

Whist I agree it Kovalev looked apprehensive when Ward was coming inside, he knew Ward would hit and work just as hard as himself so tying his opponent up and utilising his weight on Andre's neck would have an effect down the stretch I just felt Kovalev looked slower and more befuddled as the fight progressed into the latter stages as his power wasnt slowing Ward's work.

Great fight, I'm ready for a trilogy. Krusher has met his kryptonite a guy who doesn't wilt under power and pressure only excels and works harder himself.

Andre Ward is a special talent and rightfully THE POUND 4 POUND NO.1, Kovalev runs him an exceptionally close second.

completely unbiased? that was malignaggi years ago. now he is a company man...watch the broner maidana fight he had broner in the fight/winning until at the 8th round when he changed his scorecard and had maidana winning comfortably...and this is coming from one of his biggest fans
