The Ginger flop should never have pulled all that "we dont **** around" nonsense. It has proved quite costly.....

Alvarez has the $$$ but has to go through 160.
The A-side matter isn't nearly as clear as GB's press release would like to make out it is. They got the money but can't walk away from GGG without a cloud hanging over Alvarez' record.
There are months over which they can negotiate, neither side will, nor should the give or take first offers.

1. They know that they look really bad for vacating the belt and ducking Golovkin, and aside from the GGG hating trolls on this site, the majority of boxing fans know that's exactly what happened. The Canelo-Smith PPV numbers show that he isn't popular enough to sell mismatches. So they make a lot of noise about wanting the fight (not in May of course but a full year from now) so they sound like they really want it.
2. They know Golovkin will become more popular in the next year when he is likely to face Jacobs (next best MW) Saunders (unify all the belts) and a third fighter (Andy Lee or Eubanks both seem possible and entertaining), whereas Canelo is going to only fight once, against a middleweight who probably isn't top 5. His trainer has said he won't fight slick guys like Monroe, which means they don't want Saunders either. So who is he going to fight? Some no-hoper like Rosado. So it makes sense to try and lock Golovkin in now instead of later, when he coulf demand a higher percentage.
the writings are already on the wall
