Nope. Catchweights are only fine when two fighters from different divisions are meeting in the middle and no title is on the line. As soon as a title is on the line, catchweights should be prohibited.

No body offered Ward a catchweight but Dawson, to which he turned down.

The GGG Ward catchweight came about when Lof said something to Dan Rafael, and dude turned it into an article, like journalist are always so fast to do.

But it is not an offer.

I Agree! You Own 160 Belt, U Defend At 160!!! Catch Weights Are Getting Old

Tired of catch weights. You want to go up and fight for another title, go up and get it. If not then stay where u are.

          Couldn´t agree more.

GGG will most likely agree to catch weight, if not he will lose a big payday. The fight will be contested at 157, just like Hopkins vs. De La Hoya. Cotto is small, GGG is big, if a catch weight of 157 gets us the fight, then who really cares.

I really wanted to comment on some technicality's about weight/weight divisions that were mentioned earlier in this thread. Cotto is now a middleweight, it doesn't matter that he weighed in at 153 for the Geale fight. Cotto has a world and the lineal title, and has already defeated two middleweights. Canelo is not a middleweight yet, emphasis on yet. Yes 155 is with in the limits of middleweight, but Canelo has never fought a middleweight, is not ranked at middleweight and he is still ranked #2 at Jr middleweight. This fight will officially make Canelo a middleweight. Quite simply you are not considered a part of a division merely based on weight, you have to fight opponents in that division, all Canelo's fights at 155 were against Jr middleweights and were ranked as such. If Canelo were considered a middleweight any one of the fights at 155 would have affected his rank at middleweight not Jr middleweight. The same goes for Ward. Ward fought at 172 but he is not yet a light heavyweight, as he has not fought a light heavyweight, nor is he ranked, Ward is still ranked at super middleweight.

And I wish people would stop pretending Ward wasn't out for almost 2 years, pointing to his last fight at 172 as if he just went up from 168. I don't know if Ward will move up, but he fought at 172 because it was the smart thing to do after being out for so long. There's new opponents at 168 that I would like to see Ward against. I think Ward should call Loefflers bluff, by fighting 1 or 2 more fights at 168 and offering a catch weight of 165-166. I have always said, I am not a fan of catch weight's but if that gets me Cotto vs GGG, and Ward vs GGG, then I'm all for it.

What's dumb is a moronic **** where a champion of the MW division can use I'm not really a MW as reason to duck someone.

If you are not really a MW, stop calling yourself MW.

that was about Canelo, not Cotto, he fights at 155

Why should he have the MW belts if he thinks he is too small to fight MW?

I just dont understand why people think that is ok.

It would be like GGG going to 168, fight some guy on one leg to win the SMW Lineal Title, and then demanding Ward come down 160 and fight for that SMW belt.
No, to a real boxing fan it would be like Golovkin wanting to fight Froch and Chavez, but then refusing to fight Andre Ward.

True, we would have him in with Ward.

                  Not a great marketing decision.

You hit the nail on the head with what you just said...I don't like caychweights but I can deal with catchweights where they meet half way ...so 1 boxer moves up and the other moves down....if they both hold belts in the same division then catchweights should be stopped...if your not prepared to fight the best the division has to offer at the divisions stipulated weight then you have no business pretending to be a world champion at that weight

If GGG doesn't want CW the Cotto/Canelo Winner would have to either vacate or fight at 160. Simple as that.
