Deontay Wilder...Should he have looked better?

Dude says he is proud of his first swollen eye...by all accounts he dominated a game (albeit unknown/unheralded) opponent. He busted the other man up pretty bad....he got the stoppage...yet everyone is saying he should have looked better...he shouldn't have gotten that swollen eye...he drops his hands too much...he jumps when he punches....his power will suffer because of it...he has no head movement....Klit would do this and that to him.......since he has made short work of almost all his opponents he should of KO'd the frenchy in one round....etc etc....

So what's your take...Is D Dubs not the next man to rule the HW? Is he really just "lucky"? or his he a victim of his own success.......

He got the KO. That's what counts. I don't think he lost any rounds either.

His defense is none existent and he will be brutally stopped very soon. Nothing about that fight was impressive,if anything it was sad.

I took a couple things away from this fight.

-Deontay fought hard, won every round, and did so with a very badly damaged eye. He didn't cruise to a UDvictory which should please people.

-Wilder continues to fight down to the level of his opponents.

-He continues to look average against weak comp.

-I wouldn't favor him to beat Povetkin but IMO the way he fights hard, his reach and his power will make it closer than I thought.

Overall a decent performance given the situation he found himself in but he failed to meet my expectation that he would dominate a guy who IMo is a top 15-20 HWT.

He could have took the easy approach and not tried to go for the KO i.e. controlled manner, box and move win it via UD but he went out and looked to go to war and try and get the KO which he did.
He deserves credit for taking a ballsy choice on wanting to entertain and not just get the win... I enjoyed the fight.

Dominated a guy who has never been KOed or dropped.

It's just a question of who and when. Wilder is a second rate heavyweight.

Still pulls back in straight lines.

It's ridiculous how much praise and attention he's getting for going to war with a guy Pianeta comfortably outboxed in his prime.

Suddenly Duhaupas is a "thing", just to boost Wilder's stock. That guy is terrible.

Great post. That sums up my opinion of Deontay. I will say that I love watching him fight, though. He may not be great defensively and he definitely fights down to his opponents... but that makes it fun to watch!
