Roy Jones wasted years making pointless mandatories, much like what Kovalev did tonight. When you reach Kovalev's level, you don't really need these. The fighter makes the title, not visa versa.

Belts are very important for the less popular fighters though. That's part of their appeal.

Belts don't mean **** to big named guys like Canelo, Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquiao. They can sell out arenas and have people tune in whenever they want. But they do mean a lot to a guy like Kovalev.

Let's be honest if Kovalev only held one title then he probably would be an undercard fighter and occasionally appear on HBO. But because he's being promoted as the best LHW with 3/4 belts to prove it, that creates intrigue. That gives HBO a reason to show his fights.

Personally, I'd like to see Kovalev move up. The only relevant light heavy fight is Stevenson, who doesn't wanna fight him. He could wait for Ward. But, GGG is a bigger name than Kovalev. So, Ward's probably gonna try and wait on that. I'd like to see Kovalev challenge Wilder. But I guess Haymon makes that tough. Kovalev's done all he can do at light heavy. The cruiserweight division isn't real popular over here. But there's a couple Russian beltholdets there. Plus, most of the tpp guys there would love to get on the HBO platform. Chasing titles in multiple divisions always creates interest and excitement. Something I think Kovalev should consider before his career hits a stalemate waiting on things to happen.me Sotimes you gotta make things happen.
