Comments Thread For: Amir Khan's Final Floyd Mayweather Audition

By Jake Donovan - It’s a road that Amir Khan has been down plenty of times before in recent years. He’s learned to no longer get his hopes up, and now simply focus on the task at hand rather than the hypothetical scenario to which it could lead.

So why is it that – as he prepares for a showdown with fellow former 140 lb. titlist Chris Algieri at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York (Friday, Spike TV, 9:00 p.m. ET) – the greater conversation piece seems to center around whether or not it will finally lead to a long-coveted showdown with Floyd Mayweather?

There are plenty of theories abound, but Khan isn’t in the mood to hear them.

“Look, there's people putting this fight down, and I don't know why,” Khan (30-3, 19KOs) says of a bout more than a few in the industry believe to be a mismatch. “At the end of the day, well, boxes well. I definitely have to be on my "A" game.”

Khan has learned to bring his “A” game to his past couple of fights, learning to not assume that name value alone leads to his final destination. Assumption is what ultimately led to a 13-month layoff, even passing on a title fight opportunity because he didn’t want to jeopardize what he believed to be a done deal with Mayweather. Very true statement , and I've always given Kahn the credit he deserves for fighters ALL the toughest guys his whole career , and even tried to avenge his losses . But avoiding Brook and cherry picking Algeri has me a bit baffled . But then again , maybe I can give him a pass as he probably deserves this one cherry .

One cherry? Luis Collazo was one, a guy who has been past prime for about 8 years and a recovering alcoholic. Julio Diaz was one that almost went horribly wrong and he had to go life and death with him, being dropped in the process.

No disrespect to those guys but you can't be fighting those and expect to get a Mayweather fight while avoiding any top fully fledged Welterweight who can punch a little. He shamelessly ducked Kell Brook and took a fight with a light-welterweight who can't crack an egg.

But as far as an audition goes , it just won't happen as Floyd is looking to most likely coast to a fairly easy victory for his last fight and Kahn definitely ain't it . He'll probably fight an old washed up Marquez for his last fight , or old azz overrated Cotto . But I'd be willing to bet anything that He doesn't fight Kahn as Kahn is way too dangerous for Floyd because he's never lost a fight standing after 12 rounds, (Peterson don't count , it was home town cooking) and I'm not so sure Floyd has that punch in his arsenal that puts Kahn's lights out .
