Totally forgot about Macklin but that was more to do with Macklin pushing for a title shot than getting protected.

Likewise with Lee back in April.

I guess with the recent comments he made about Canelo and when Martinez was the lineal champ he would rather protect his investment than have it spoiled.

Besides, name someone at 168 available and worth a damn.
I'd rather he break Bernard Hopkins.

you already listed them. The names at 168 may not be much either but its far better than whats at 160 for him.

I dont give a damn about him defending his belt against some scrub like Johnson in a glorified sparring session. I want to see him competitive fights.

Johnson and two other MW's, Who can guess who the other 2 are?
Johnson, Jorge Heiland and ... someone else; maybe Nielsen.

None of the options have a heavy enough punch to do anything, so you're basically looking at another 15:1 fight.

          moving on

Martinez was in a position where he makes his own decisions. The hell with what Dibella says. If the fighters want the fight, Dibella has obviously shown he won't stop them. Dibella is not preventing anything. If Monroe doesn't take the fight, it would be because of Monroe, not Dibella.

What he's going to do after he wins his May fight at MW? There is nothing there for him.
Fight the N'Dam-Lemieux winner, or Lee-Saunders winner (assuming Lee beats Quillin).

Every single fighter who fights low level opposition can fight 4 times a year, everybody did it. Wait until he steps up, let's see if he can fight 4 times a year. If he fights Froch and Ward in the same year, there's no way he fights a third fighter. The punishment you take in the pros at the top level by top level boxers is only something that the elite fighters know of. Tell me when was the last time GGG took any serious punishment? Dudes in his weight class can't even punch relative to every other weight class, collectively, they are above Minimumweight and that's it, they're below everyone else in the power category.

Donaire went from fighting 3-4 times a year fighting low level fighters and not taking punishment. He's now averaging 2 fights a year ever since his loss to Rigo.

Bottom line: Harder fights=more training time and more recovery time needed, way more serious training camps, changes to your routine, post fight precautions, preventing any prolonged head injuries by relaxing after a tough 12 round fight, recovering the body. There's absolutely no reason to take a break of any kind after fighting Adama, Rubio and Geale. He has to make up for his weak opposition with volume. Fighting 3-4 times is the least he can do.

The same caliber fighter at 168 would end up in the same result.
How would that be more interesting?
