Best I Trained
Romulo Quirarte Sr - From February 2024
BEST JAB
Humberto Soto: “Humberto Soto and Raul Pérez. I would pick Soto. He had a very good sense of timing, so his jab was always on point. That’s why I made him so good with his jab, to be able to open almost every combination with his jab, and then he was able to land the punches after it.
BEST DEFENSE
Julio César Chávez: “Julio used to spend hours and hours after training doing a lot of bending. He was able to catch and stop punches. If you look at highlights of him, you can see he makes a lot of opponents mis, due to his beautiful upper-body movement.”
BEST HAND SPEED
Manuel Medina: “He has speed; he doesn’t have power. What I tried to do was help him develop that speed, and that’s one of the reasons he was able to become a five-time world champion. He had amazing fundamentals and was able to adapt and to be able to [move around] the ring and use his hand speed to win fights.”
BEST FOOTWORK
Alexandro Santiago: “We work with the abilities that every fighter has, because all of them are different. Some can be big punchers, some of them have the ability to move and avoid and counterpunch, and that’s exactly what we have done with Santiago. Even though he is still developing, he can get way better. He’s not in his prime yet. He has the ability to move and is very smart to get in and out when he needs to throw combinations.”
SMARTEST
Chávez: “Without a doubt, Julio Cesar Chávez. He was something completely special. Very smart.”
STRONGEST
Juan Jos?Estrada: “Estrada was a strong fighter who always moved forward.”
BEST CHIN
Chávez: “When you talk about a puncher, you can not make a puncher. It doesn’t matter what kind of exercises you do – you either have it or you don’t have it. The same thing with a chin. He was born with those attributes. … The work ethic and exercise, the way he used to roll with the punch made him even better, but [he had] a tremendous chin.”
BIGGEST PUNCHER
''Yori Boy'' Campas: “He had amazing power. Estrada could really punch; he could knock somebody out with one punch. Chavez would stop you, but that was due to tremendous punishment.”
BEST BOXING SKILLS
Chávez: “Without a doubt, Julio Cesar Chavez. Soto was an incredible, smart fighter, but Julio was above all of them. That’s why he’s the king.”
BEST OVERALL
Chávez: “He was special in all aspects. His heart was unbreakable – mentally you will never break that guy apart. I never saw [him have] a doubt, especially when he was in his prime. You can even see when he was losing that fight with Meldrick Taylor, he never once had a doubt. Even [when] he knew he was behind, he pulled [off] an amazing victory. The burning desire he used to have, his work ethic and consistency was just incredible, and that’s why he became who he was. And to this day, he still applies that discipline and consistency. He was the full package. Anything you can want in a fighter, he had.”

Vic Darchinyan - June 2024
BEST JAB
Christian Mijares: “Mijares had a good jab.”
BEST DEFENSE
Nicholas Walters: “Abner Mares protected himself good; I couldn’t land a clean punch. I couldn’t land a good punch against Walters; I think he had the best defense.”
BEST FOOTWORK
Anselmo Moreno: “He moved good in the ring; he didn’t let me get too close to him. Donaire had good footwork.”
BEST HANDSPEED
Moreno: “He had quick hands.”
SMARTEST
Moreno: “He was very smart. He knew I was a big puncher; he just outpointed me.”
STRONGEST
Cuellar: “He was very strong. He was much heavier than me – 10, 12 kilograms [more] than me.”
BEST CHIN
Cuellar: “I punched him with big punches to the chin and he just took the punch. I couldn’t believe it. He took a very big punch and he held it.”
BEST PUNCHER
Cuellar: “He could punch. I think he was a bigger puncher than Donaire. He caught me with a punch in the ninth round in the second fight.”
BEST BOXING SKILLS
Moreno: “It is Moreno. I was getting upset because I couldn’t punch him; I was missing. He was the most talented boxer I ever fought.
BEST OVERALL
Irene Pacheco: “I was very hungry. I couldn’t believe anybody in the world could beat me. That’s how I beat Irene Pacheco. He is one of the best opponents. I lost fights because I didn’t clear my mind; I didn’t get ready because I just thought I was going to punish them and knock them out. He was the best opponent.”

Randall Bailey - August 2024
BEST JAB
Mike Jones: “I think it was his size, because he was so big it took me a while to get to him like I wanted to. I didn’t knock him out until the 11th round, and how I knocked him out, I had to get by his jab. [The Jab] made getting closer to him a little difficult.”
BEST DEFENSE
DeMarcus Corley: “In the first fight, he was a little slick. I was having a lot of problems adjusting to the southpaw stance. It was hard for me to hit him flush in the first fight.”
BEST FOOTWORK
Corley: “He was real slippery and able to get out the way. I couldn’t hit him like I wanted.”
FASTEST HANDS
Devon Alexander: “Devon didn’t really throw for power; he was throwing for speed and moved out the way real quick. He was throwing to touch and escape.”
SMARTEST
Miguel Cotto: “When I did get him in trouble, he basically retreated so he was able to get himself together, and he didn’t try to be real ballsy and show ego. He did what he had to do. He used his head.”
STRONGEST
Cotto: “Cotto had a large bottom half, his legs and everything. He was real strong on the bottom, and that’s what made his body punches and inside attack so good.”
BEST CHIN
Ener Julio: “I would say he had a good chin, because when I hit him, I saw his head hit the ground before his knees did. (laughs) Normally nobody gets up from a shot like that, but he did, not once but twice, and I couldn’t put him away.”
BIGGEST PUNCHER
Diosbelys Hurtado: “He had sneaky power. He was fast and he had power and would definitely make you pay for mistakes.”
BEST BOXING SKILLS
Hector Lopez: “Hector was a smart, cagey veteran. He was doing things in the ring I hadn’t seen before, his movement and the way he threw his punches. He was hitting me with shots and I was saying to myself, ‘How’s he even hitting me?’ Hector went the distance with Kostya Tszyu, Miguel Angel Gonzalez – he fought these guys tooth and nail, life and death. Good skills.”
BEST OVERALL
Cotto: “His whole career. After we fought, you saw how he went to the next level. Out of all the guys I fought, I don’t think nobody has reached that pinnacle that Miguel reached. That’s why I would definitely have to give that accolade to him.”

Kiko Martinez - Oct 2024
BEST JAB
Leo Santa Cruz: “He has a big wingspan and his jab is very annoying, it was accurate and precise. It was difficult to get close to him to hit him.”
BEST DEFENSE
Carl Frampton: “It was difficult to land a punch on him because of his skill and leg movements. Also Gary Russell Jr.”
BEST FOOTWORK
Frampton: “He was very precise in his movements; he never took a wrong step.”
BEST HANDSPEED
Gary Russell Jr.: “He has the speed of light. His punches were too quick for my reflexes.”
SMARTEST
Leo Santa Cruz: “I managed to hurt him and he was able to adapt and change his fighting strategy. To me, that makes him smarter than the rest.”
STRONGEST
Frampton: “Excellent physical condition. He wouldn’t back down from my onslaught, which is why the first fight was so extremely hard and we both ended up broken.”
BEST PUNCHER
Frampton: “He’s strong in general, his whole physique, but he’s also a great boxer, so his technique together with his strength made him a very dangerous guy.”
BEST CHIN
Scott Quigg: “I punched him hard in the first round, with all my power, and he resisted very well. Many of my opponents went to the ground with half the power that I managed to connect with Quigg.”
BEST BOXING SKILLS
Russell Jr.: “Everything he did, he did well, and I couldn’t connect with him like I would have liked to in the whole fight. Speed is what hurts you and I couldn’t see his punches. I think just when the fight was stopped because of the cut he started to slow down a bit, but until the third round it was impossible for me to see his hands. I recognize that he was two steps above me that night.”
BEST OVERALL
Russell Jr.: “Complete fighter: Fast, heavy puncher, untouchable. With Russell I just didn’t stand a chance.”

Carlos Hernandez - November 2024
BEST JAB
Erik Morales: “He kept the range and that’s how basically he won the fight using his jab and technical skills. I was just an inside fighter, I wanted that Barrera-Morales type fight and he didn’t give it to me. He was smart enough to use that distance, use that jab and win the fight.”
BEST DEFENSE
Floyd Mayweather Jr.: “Floyd Mayweather was untouchable, although I was ranked No. 4 best fighter to ever land most shots on him. That’s pretty cool but it’s still hard to catch him with a nice shot because he’s so slick.”
BEST HANDSPEED
Mayweather: “It was on point, you wouldn’t see it coming. I really worked on my head movement for that fight but still he was sharp, he was fast.”
BEST FOOTWORK
Genaro Hernandez: “Genaro Hernandez was very smooth, very sharp with his feet, he was able to be in and out. Also Mayweather, his footwork was great with other fighters but with me because of the knockdown and hurt hand, he became went more into survival mode, it was a lot more using the ring, he had really good footwork to keep me away but Genaro naturally had really good footwork, him being tall, lanky fighter his footwork was unmatchable. I would say Genaro because he wasn’t in survival mode and Mayweather was, so I think Genaro had better footwork.”
SMARTEST
Mayweather: “The guy was just a genius in the ring, he knew how to be smart. He had to adjust from being dominant in the first few rounds to now being survival mode where he had to not be in the line of fire and get away, use his footwork but also use that one hand that works as a jab to keep me at bay. That was smart, not all fighters adapt because their heart tells them to but not because they’re smart, they fall into that but he was smart enough to adjust and adapt.”
STRONGEST
Aaron Zarate: “That would be my first loss against Aaron Zarate, he was trained by the great Nacho Beristain and that guy was physically strong. He was on me, he was manhandling me, where I thought I was the stronger one. I couldn’t match his strength, his man strength, throwing me around. That threw me off.”
BEST PUNCHER
Douglas Villarreal: “I knew the guy was a solid fighter and he hits me on the top of the head, all I remember seeing was a white flash. We worked a lot on if I were to get hurt how to adjust and how to disguise and fight through that and I was able to do that. He didn’t know I was hurt. I wasn’t staggering or anything but I couldn’t see. I had to get close and feel his body and when I was able to recover a few seconds later I was able to compose myself and then I was able to take a step back, land a right uppercut, he went down and that was it. I didn’t feel Morales punching power, I didn’t respect that power. He didn’t have that power I thought he could have had. Maybe because I had him always going back and he didn’t have that leverage to connect that power shot. He was just busy with his jab and that’s how he was able to beat me.”
BEST CHIN
Juan Angel Macias: “The guy was a strong guy, who could take my punches and I couldn’t believe it. I would throw some solid right hands and the guy was taking them and kept coming. I had to adjust and go to the body and that’s how I was able to take him out. Goyo Vargas had a chin but [Macias] I felt like I was throwing my hardest. Goyo Vargas was a world class fighter so it was kind of hard to get a great solid shot. With Macias he was an average guy and he was taking all my shots. I could land at will and he could take my shots. That’s why I would say Macias had the toughest chin that I can remember.”
BEST BOXING SKILLS
Mayweather: “The guys just a great boxer, the skills are unmatched. He was amazing. He was on another level. He was very smooth. It was an art form from Floyd and I was just fortunate that I was able to fight a guy like that and give him my best.”
BEST OVERALL
Mayweather: “Just his demeanor in the ring, his knowledge in the ring. Everything about him is amazing, you have to take your hat off to the guy. The guy is a natural, it’s not like he struggles in there, he makes it look easy and although I made it kinda hard for him, he had to work for his win against me. I fought other great fighters like Erik Morales, Genaro, Goyo Vargas, Stevie Forbes but these guy weren’t still what Floyd was. He was fast, he was able to move quick, the shoulder roll, he had it down. People try to emulate that and it just doesn’t come out the way they wish it would.”
