The myth of Malignaggi as a good boxer...

Where has this come from? He's not a good boxer. People think of him as this guy with great skills, slick defense, speed, awesome footwork, yet he has very little of any of that stuff.

His speed is ok, pretty standard in fact.
His footwork is very straight forward and basic, absolutely nothing special. A lot of it actually hinders him, rather than helps and he rarely uses it to set guys up well.
His jab is decent, not great, not even that good. It's decent.
    His defense is ****e.
His overall skills are lacking and his technique a bit ****e.

He has been outboxed a lot over his career. He's not a guy, like I've seen written many, many, many times, that would be a great of this era if he had power.

So, where did this myth come from? It couldn't have come from his fights, because he's been outboxed a lot and if people had seen most of his fights, they'd understand that he's gotten by on volume and very basic boxing offense and just being a bit better than the ****ty contenders he's mostly beaten. He's been outfought, outboxed, and outsmarted and if he was a good boxer, he would never have had the trouble with all the mediocre contenders that he's always struggled to beat. He would have clearly beaten many of the guys he's fought and done much better against the guys he's lost to if he had all these skills that people say of him.

Awful defense. Should have retired after the Judah win.

I've even heard him mentioned for the HOF, by lots of people here, and himself.

What the **** bollocks is that about?!? The guy isn't close to being worthy of that. Christ....

I like his commentating, but people just seem to have some really weird views that are simply untrue.

You don't even get mentioned as being an eventual possibility, when they've run out of the true greats, for the HOF when your best win is a shot Judah.

His resume is: shot Judah, Diaz, N'dou, Senchenko. This is the resume of a HOFer? One of the greatest fighters to ever step in the ring? People should be ****ing ashamed of themselves saying things like this. Is that the resume of a guy that belongs among the greatest fighters ever, like Hopkins, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Jones Jr, and going back, Ali, Robinson, Duran, Leonard.

He's not even a good paper champion of this era. He's a weak contender, nothing more. Every time he's stepped up to anything resembling the actual championship level, he's been ****ing dominated, knocked out, beaten up.

No mate. You don't know what you're watching if you think he is.

Now, before going on, let me clarify something.

Obviously he's a good boxer. He's a general world rated fighter. Anyone and everyone who gets close to that level is a good boxer, and if you manage to hold a paper title or two, you are obviously a good boxer. Margarito is a good boxer. Baldomir is a good boxer. Mayorga is a good boxer. Chris Arreola is a good boxer.

But we are talking about being a good boxer for that type of level already, not just in a standard general sense. For an elite, world level standard, the way he is talked about being he is absolutely, unequivocally not a good boxer in the way many people think and talk of him as being.

I think people just look at him moving backwards and jabbing, with no power, and think to themselves "he must be a good boxer if he's moving backwards and throwing lots of jabs" without having the slightest clue of what makes a good boxer in the way he is talked about.

Kissing Floyd's starfish whenever he fights will get you a lot of respect from certain folks.

he's like a B+ fighter, good but not great. his persistent jab is excellent against slower fighters and it's his main weapon, footwork and positioning is usually above average.. accuracy is usually good.. great heart/fighting spirit and that can be a weapon in itself.. power below average.. overall a world class B+ fighter, some attributes higher than average, some attributes lower..

Well, if you're talking about what I clarified in the last post, then I agree but that's not what I'm talking about, nor what other people mean when they talk about it.

With that line of thinking, every guy at or near the top is clearly a good boxer. We take that level for granted though, and so we talk about them differently.

There you go. What you gotta be great to be good now? What kind of two division major titlist isn't good? I mean the worst guy that can claim that had to be at least good at his job for god's sake.
