He's far more powerful than either. Looks like statistically, the numbers favor Martinez.

Martinez has a healthy dose of mediocrity outside of Williams.

How in gods name are the opponents of Cotto worse than Martinez?

1. Rodriguez: Good solid fringe contender. 1. Murray: top 10 middleweight.
2. Trout: Top 10 junior middleweight, hasn't been able to win a world title (WBA regulars don't count). 2. Chavez Jr.: Top five middleweight.
3. Mayweather: Obviously, better than any of Martinez's opponents, p4p. 3. Macklin: Top five middleweight coming off of a good performance against Sturm.
4. Margarito: Hadn't won a notable fight in quite some time. Was coming off a beating at the hands of Pacquiao that destroyed his eye. 4. Barker: Undefeated, would go on to defeat top three middleweight Daniel Geale.
5. Foreman: Good junior middleweight with a solid win over Daniel Santos. 5. Dzinziruk: Undefeated top junior middleweight. Excellent jab and defensive skills. Notable victories over Daniel Dawson, Daniel Santos, Joel Julio, and a much younger Lukas Konecny.
6. Pacquiao: Obviously, p4p better than Martinez's opponents. 6: Williams: Former welterweight champion. Top ten middleweight. Top ten p4p. Iron chinned. Got destroyed by Martinez.

So Cotto has the two best opponents, but Martinez has more consistency. His quality of opposition is overall better. Another thing is that Martinez's opponents are much bigger than Cotto's. So Martinez is used to fighting bigger guys. Cotto is not.
