The size difference is impressive, Martínez looks a hell lot bigger (note, bigger, not taller)

People are talking about Martinez being shot, that he has no legs, but even with no movement he's a lot stronger than Cotto. Actually I think that if Martínez stays in the pocket he has a much better chance of knocking out Cotto. Maravilla has power in both hands, and while Cotto is a hard puncher he's not a 160 fighter. Martínez has taken shots from much bigger and stronger fighters like Chavez Jr, Barker and Macklin.

Cotto is a fantastic fighter, but if Martínez gets some leverage behind his punches then he'll take out Cotto, especially if the fights goes to the last rounds. Martínez has fantastic stamina, even without training the guy is a physical specimen, he has a great natural stamina, while Cotto usually gets tired at round 7-8.

Over about the same amount of rounds, Cotto’s opponents threw 712 more punches than Martinez opponents. Sounds like Cotto's opponents were more competitive. Martinez’s opponents landed at a higher percentage than Cotto’s opponents. By the way, I did say the last 6 fights.

Let's see who got hit more.
            Cotto-Rodriguez: 16 punches
            Cotto-Trout: 238 punches
            Cotto-Mayweather: 179 punches
            Cotto-Margarito: 157 punches
            Cotto-Foreman 71 punches
            Cotto-Pacquiao: 336 punches
            I couldn't find Cotto-Mayorga. That's why I included Cotto-Pacquiao.
Total Rounds: 57 Total Punches: 997 Punches per round: 17.5
            Martinez-Murray: 160 punches
            Martinez-Chavez: 178 punches
            Martinez-Macklin: 135 punches
            Martinez-Barker: 155 punches
            Martinez-Dzinziruk: 161 punches
            Martinez-Williams 2: 33 punches
Total Rounds: 56 Total Punches: 822. Punches per round: 14.7

So Cotto, against a mostly lower level of opposition, got hit more than Martinez did against a higher level of opposition. Looks like Cotto is easier to hit. Look who Cotto got hit against the most: Pacquiao and Trout. Both fast. Both southpaws. Martinez is also very fast and also a southpaw. He's taller and rangier than either. He's far more powerful than either. Looks like statistically, the numbers favor Martinez.

And I said I couldn't fight the stats for the Mayorga fight. The reason Cotto's opponents throw more punches is because Cotto doesn't move like Martinez does. Martinez uses movement to reduce opponents' punch output. That's why Macklin and Murray, who threw over 1,000 punches each against Sturm, threw about half that against Martinez. Martinez's ability to reduce his opponents' punch output is part of his defense. That's why the connect percentage against him is deceiving.

Granted Martinez movement causes it's share of difficulties. But movement doesn't stop guys like Margarito, even in losing to Pacquiao he still threw over 800 punches, even with over a thousand coming back at him. Martinez doesnt have Pacquiaos foot speed.Cotto's just faced better fighters in his career, more seasoned pros. You mention what Macklin and Barker did to Sturm, Felix Sturm is a bum, he is a stationary medium volume fighter.. Every fight night in Germany is like Christmas for that dude. Martinez has never had to deal with speed coming back at him. Hes never had to deal with a pressure fighter of this caliber, who can box and move with above average foot speed, and counter punch extremely well.

Cotto's never had to deal with the combination of size, strength, speed, power, and stamina he's about to face. The closest he came was Austin Trout, who overpowered and outboxed him. Martinez has faced bigger, stronger fighters than Cotto. How is Cotto going to pressure Martinez without getting counterpunched? You act like Cotto is on another level to the guys Martinez has fought. But middleweight Cotto will be too undersized. A middleweight version of Cotto certainly won't be the best opponent Martinez has faced. And Cotto, while fast, is not vastly faster than the guys Martinez has fought. Williams was pretty fast, for example.

I like both dudes....Cotto alot more though....I've never picked against Maravilla though....Pavlik, Big Pun, Jr and whoever else, I picked Maravilla.....but I got Cotto in this one....a few years ago this was a mismatch imo....Maravilla should still be fav'd but Cotto is liver now than he would've been a few years ago imo

                      I like this fight
