Ray, you forgot to add the qualifier to his statement. To quote Floyd directly from the FloydHype.com interview:

BT: Would you advice him to jump right back into an immediate rematch with Maidana or do you think he should take a tune-up fight first?

FM: "I don't think he should be focused on chasing the Maidana fight. I think what would be a good move for him is this. May 3rd, fight on my undercard; you know, fight a solid guy at 140, get back on track and get your career in order. That fight with Maidana should be nothing but a minor setback for a major comeback. But as far as Adrien is concerned, he still has a lot to learn. When I spoke to him after his fight, I said you're gonna have people that like you; you're gonna have people that dislike you. The thing is this, I have fans that like me and I have fans that don't like, but you gonna respect me. Once people get to throwing bottles and throwing beer on you, throwing different things at you at the fight, you're losing respect from the fans."

First, props to Floyd on trying to school AB on what it's like to be respected. That's what a mentor should be doing. Too bad for Floyd his words are wasted on an immature, stubborn egomaniac.

Now regarding your comment, Ray, you neglected to state the full reason for Floyd wanting AB to not pursue a rematch. In other words, Floyd needs AB on his undercard to pump up the volume of PPVs since he'll need all the help he can get while making war (cough, cough) on king Khan.

    'Nuff said.

I doubt there was any official rematch clause but since Broner pulls in numbers they made one up.

Because GBP was certain to keep Broner away from Maidana, by making it not seem like Broner chickened out by not executing his rematch... Well, The Problem chose otherwise.

I wonder why they're so eager for the rematch.

If Broner loses again, which could easily happen, his career takes another huge hit.

In their mind Khan has been set in stone since before Maidana-Broner happened. When Maidana won they still didn't realize the implication thinking it would be easy to guide public perception that Khan is the better opponent.

Only after the fight, and after Schaeffer gave his comments on Broner's best interests, did GBP see that boxing fans actually preferred Maidana and there was only lukewarm interest in a fight with a guy like Khan who hasn't won an important fight in years.

Now they are in damage control mode to try to preempt backlash to announcing Khan as an opponent.

For Khan-Mayweather to have even a slight chance of being successful with hardcore fans they need to rule Maidana out on a technicality and avoid criticism.

I guarantee GBP went to Broner's team at a certain point and said "if you exercise this clause and lose we will protect your career by guaranteeing you another big money fight regardless of result".
I agree with a lot of this. Recent developments have made me disgusted. Point blank: Floyd and his handlers could have had the Maidana fight if they wanted it. They picked the less legitimate less dangerous opponent and crafted a set of circumstances to justify doing so. I find it unlikely Broner put in a rematch clause with how sure of himself he was prior to getting blitzed.

Don't talk to me about styles or that Khan squeaked by Maidana 4-5 years ago. Based on their recent performances Maidana is the far more dangerous fighter at this point in time.

Probably Broner himself pressed this issue.

Say he wins doe, triology. $$$

Say he lose doe, he fades and becomes another Berto. Maidana is set up with a possible fight with Floyd.

Either way doe, GBP will extract the necessary $$. Why GBP will keep investing in Broner when he is obvious a non-elite (or even a non-factor) at WW. If Broner decides to cash himself out, he has done so. GBP wouldn't mind. Remember he can be fed to other fighters as well.

Who cares if Schaefer lied or not? We're about to get treated to a second helping of ass whippin' with a misery garnish.

It's possible Floyd didn't like the idea of fighting Maidana.

They want to give Broner a chance to erase what Maidana did. He's gonna be running and trying to potshot. It's gonna be a suckass fight compared to the first one. Don't know what some cats are getting so excited about, they are stalling Chino's great momentum he had going with this utter bs.
