It reminds me in a way how so many made a massive deal of Marroquinn landing a counter left hook on Rigondeaux despite him staying upright.
If anything that wasn't a flaw that was exposed, it was a strength.
He did what a pro fighter should when hurt. He created room, landed a beautiful bodyshot then tied his man up and made sure his head was clear.

On top of that; Marroquin is legit fighter. People tried to discredit him before the Rigo fight, but knowing his amateur background and size, I knew it was a good test for Rigo. He can crack as well, wouldn't mind seeing him in with Donaire at some point.
A lot of people discredit him to this day. I actually think the Marroquin fight was a set up for Rigo to lose.

A guy coming in ten pounds over the limit is actually just below average these days. It's really not very much at all. Think of Pac coming in up near the welterweight limit when he was just a SBW/featherweight. That's twice what Matthyse gains.

Coming in at 150 as a JWW isn't anything and at 5'6" he's just a normal, decent sized guy there. Pac is as big, if not bigger and he's thought of as small at 147. Hell, he was bigger than Hatton and Hatton was considered a good size at 140 so surely Matthyse coming in at 150 and being 5'6" isn't much, especially these days.

We weren't addressing his height, though. It's matter of him being able to take a punch at welterweight.

It's not that u don't see Lucas get hit often because he does, it's the fact that those guys hitting him are pillow fisted. Lucas had no respect for their power, throw Lucas in there with a heavy puncher and we'll see how he reacts.

Where did you get that statistic? He was 153 for his fight against Judah and Dallas... I think he's weighed in over 150 for all of his fights since Harris. Where everyone is getting this whole, he might not be big enough for welterweight parroting is hilarious. If he comes into the ring as a JMW from a '40-pound contest, chances are, he's walking around at '60. Hopkins is sitting there doing interviews saying he hits like a middleweight. I'm sure if he fights a puncher at welterweight, he probably won't just smile and walk through it, but I'm certain he could take some shots from guys like Malignaggi, Bradley, Alexander, and even Mayweather (especially with a track record of hand injuries).

I wouldn't doubt that, I still remember that whole time the fight was supposedly signed, it was on-again off-again. They didn't even know until a week before the fight date whether Rigo was Marroquin, TBA, or at all.

His fight night weight for the Peterson fight was 150.

I'm certainly not arguing that he can't take a punch from guys like that. I'm just talking the big punchers like Thurman or Ortiz or Pac or Marquez.

Matthysse's size isn't an issue at all with a potential Mayweather fight. Mayweather's only weighing 150 or so as well. That's why I think the Matthysse-Garcia winner will be a great option next year for Mayweather, because size isn't an issue with either of those guys.

                  Lucas was 150 for Peterson
                  151 for Zab Judah
                  153 against Dallas

He doesn't need to move up to welterweight yet. Hes not even big at the weight Prescott, Rios, Alvarado all hydrate to 156-159.
Wasn't Broner 156 for DeMarco? that was with him moving up to 135 from 130

Its very common for a fighter to hydrate 10-12lbs. In fact apart from Froch, Floyd, B-Hop I can't really think of a fighter that doesn't.

If hes struggling to make the weight then he should move up by all means but lets not make out hes towering guys at the weight when the reality is they most likely have a few lbs over him on fight night as well as being significantly taller & longer with the exception of Judah.
He really is not big at the weight by any means if anything hes probably on the slightly small to average side of things.

If he can still make Feather I'd like to see him fight Donaire if he does move up.
I didn't even know that. I like him at '26, maybe '30. He has the size. I'm sure he's outgrown '22 at this point. But there's a lot for him at '26 and he'd be better off not wearing himself thin trying to make '22--besides, he already fought the best at '22 and it wasn't close.

I'd pick him to beat Donaire at '26 or higher.

I will say that Mathysse is a very different fighter now than he was then. He's less reckless and applies intelligent pressure now.
