The TS has a good point - fighters from previous generations tend to get overrated

The ATGs of this era would be more than a match for all the other ATGs from any other era.

Well done Larry, you made a post i agree with.
Of course our great, great grandads will hark back to the old says saying it was better back then, but thats cos they are biased. So its only fair we give credit to todays fighters cos we cant rely on biased people from the past to give credit where its due.

ATG's like Hopkins, Pac, Floyd, Roy Jones jr etc would be a handful for almost anyone if they're put in a proper weight class.
This is never the case with all the hypothetical fantasy fights on this board.

Pac and Floyd does not belong at welterweight historically any more than Roy belongs at heavyweight. And i think this is where most of the frustration of "newer fans" stems from.

Be it music, boxing, art, etc, it's questionable to ignore generations of talent and assume that you are witnessing the greatest. I think were all want to do it because people have a desire to validate their generation. But, most of the greatest boxes of all time are not currently boxing.

Larry is to Boxingscene what Lil B is to Hip Hop, a very good troll.

              Hey hows it going dude.

Just been reading all this thread.

Anyway, heres an interesting quote about Jack Johnson , which i think you and many other probably already know or have read before

              from :

Nat Fleischer, founder of Ring ****zine, saw every heavyweight champion from James J. Corbett to Muhammad Ali and rated Jack Johnson as the greatest heavyweight he had ever seen. Fleischer wrote, “Jack Johnson boxed on his toes, could block from most any angle, was lightning fast on his feet, could feint an opponent into knots…he possessed everything a champion could hope for punch, speed, brains, cleverness, boxing ability and sharp-shooting. Johnson’s mastery of ring science, his ability to block, counter, and feint, are still unexcelled.”

^ thats Jack Johnson sparring an exhibition with Joe Jeanette at 60+ yrs old. God bless em.

U can see Jack show boat, land a few shots and then quickly tie up Joe Jeanette.

You can see Jack open his guard ( could be said as "drawing" ) and then parry jabs.

              Very nice too see.

^ thats SRR vs Joey Maxim

Watching Sugars movement is really amazing to watch. I especially like his movment and circling to the left. His movement is so gracefull. His feet stay in perfect position at all times and hes so well co ordinated, so fluid and stays well in balance. It looks superb. Really cool when hes moving to his left and peppering jabs.

^ thats footage of Joe Louis.

You can see his feet are stuck to the ground. Planted in , rooted in. He has amazing balance and is able to shift body weight very well into his shots. Dude was a destroyer. The way he moves, plants his feet and shifts his weight amplify his natural power.

              As said here:

Blackburn came into Louis camp on June 25, 1934 and watched Joe spar. He saw that Louis had natural punching power, something that could not be taught, but he also saw that he was only a puncher at that time and still fairly green. Blackburn speaking of those early days with his young protégé said, July 20, 1935 Pittsburgh Courier, “Louis needed correction in everything except hitting. I had to teach him to back up his punches with the proper timing, accuracy and to instruct him in the proper art of balance. I trained him under the same methods I trained under when I was a fighter.”

Joe had natural speed and power but coming out of the amateurs he was dancing around and not planting his feet to punch with authority. Louis said in his autobiography Joe Louis My Life, “He (Blackburn) saw my faults right off. I was hitting off balance. He corrected this by showing me how to plant my feet and punch with my whole body, not just swinging my arms. He said people going to fights don’t want to see a dancer or a clincher –they want to see a man who goes for the guts. He said I had strength and that I could beat or knock out anybody I wanted to if I planted my body in the right position.”
sorry if uve read that and already know

              from here :

I agree that old school fighters are not automatically the best. But you cant go around and say stuff like in this thread. Sometimes theres a lot more than sees the eye and we have to look several times to see it.

Il give u a prime example larry since you are a floyd mayweather jr fan.

i.e , people saying floyd is just a shoulder roll and it doesnt work with south paws. All they see is floyd rolling right crosses and then say the shoulder roll or floyds defense wont work with south paws with out knowing anythign about floyds defence or the nuances of his style. ( not saying i do either, but we can watch him and learn more, and yes.. his style as far as i can see is a whole lot more than just a shoulder roll )

I would pick Pacquiao over Armstrong in a hearbeat. Armstrong was slow as hell and only fought handpicked opponents that stood right in front of him.

Ceferino Garcia is considered one of his "tough" fights but all Garcia did was play tough guy and stand toe to toe with him all night.

Barney Ross aka Dov-Ber "Beryl" David Rosofsky was a mob guy with ties to Capone who probably got more gifts than a little girl on her 5th birthday because from watching his fights he's overrated as hell.

You watch his fight with Armstrong and he is total garbage. The history nerds claim he was shot, but he was only around 30, lol.
