The Entire Top Rank PPV Cost Half As Much As Berto's Purse...

    Against Freddy Hernandez...

I don’t really have much to add but I found it interesting that, as it related to Andre Berto’s purse of $910,000 for facing no-hoper Freddie Hernandez, what ended up being a very good night of boxing this past weekend at the Honda Center in Anaheim (sans Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and the whole card taking away what Junior was supposed to receive, which I was told was $650,000), didn’t cost Top Rank that much. In fact, I’m told it cost a little over half of what HBO doled out to Berto/Haymon.

Is a Berto fight really worth almost double what Soto-Antillon, let alone Donaire-Sidorenko, Garcia-Lontchi, and Wolak-Pinzon?

I wish Showtime and HBO would put together these cards all the time with 4 fights like this. They are cheap, and are great for the fans.

I was wrong about this card. It seems TR did a great job with this card.

It definitely would be, but their executives are too lazy to be able to think and act upon it. I remember seeing Cloud getting around $125K for the Johnson fight and Glen getting close to, but even less.

Imagine if they knew they would draw better ratings if they started showing fighters from different backgrounds in great fights, instead of a Berto mismatch?

But it didn't. And there's nothing you can do about it. There isn't one person on this site that doesn't believe that Berto was grossly overpaid for that fight. But that's what HBO does with Haymon fighters. In 09, they paid 3.25M to Dawson-Tarver for their rematch, which effectively took a lot of fights away from happening at the end of 09. The guys at HBO are clowns. Once again, nothing we can do about it.
