It goes back to my argument that Leonard was the bigger name than Duran (the opposite of your opinion) back before they fought.

      Hagler fought UNDERNEATH Leonard-Benitez...
Leonard was, even then, the biggest draw in the sport !

You just don't get what I'm saying. All boxing ****zine considered Duran, god of boxing. Why you think Duran is loved even today. Duran was considered the best lightweight of all time & you telling me the young Ray was a bigger name. Give me a break!

              YOU...are missing MY point.

The MORE POPULAR (general public) fighter is the one who would get the benefit of the doubt, not the one respected by fight people.

Ray Leonard was already far more POPULAR than Duran.

Who would have been more likely to get a "controversial" decision, had their fight went to the cards -
Oscar DeLaHoya or Bernard Hopkins ?

Ray was not more popular at that time. Everywhere people talked about how great Duran was. Ray was big, but not in Duran level. Another thing Hagler was never a big star for most of his career until he knocked out Hearns.

So.....Duran was doing 7Up commercials back then ?
Ray Leonard was the darling of the '76 Olympics....made 40K for his first fight ( a record at the time)...& had the majority of his pro fights televised.

Did the average American sports fan know Duran that well ? No...
                    but everyone knew Leonard.

I believe the 7 up commercial came after the Duran fight. But I'm not 100% sure. Duran was famous in a different way, just like Tyson. Tyson never did commercials. But everyone in the world knew who tyson was. Just everyone knew Duran at that time, he was god of boxing at that time. That is why he's a legend today, not for his fights against Ray, Hearns & Hagler.
