That depends on how you define 'success.' I guess any fight with a million ppv buys or over could be viewed as being a success, until you put it into perspective.....

I define these ppv buys as being borderline 'disappointing' to 'decent.' I don't see how it could be anything but, when you had outrageous hype and publicity for this fight. And let's not forget Golden Boy's early predictions (they set themselves up for a let down).

This fight had 24/7, was on ESPN's Sportscenter, ESPN 2, talked about on other sports talk shows on ESPN/radio ESPN, commercials out the ass, plastered on most sports websites, articles almost every other day on Yahoo Sports, etc. Don't fool yourself into believing that this fight had anything less than MASSIVE hype -- it was EVERYWHERE.

Then you take into account Mayweather and Mosley themselves: Mayweather after all of the steroid allegations, testing issues for a possible face-off against Pacquiao, Floyd being the heel that he is, facing off against Mosley, a well known 'good guy' who was perceived to have a decent shot at beating Floyd, or at the very least would make Mayweather FIGHT.....I don't see how anyone could spin these numbers as some huge success. I bet the promotions are disappointed behind closed doors, and didn't make near as much money they thought they would given the huge promotion blitz.

It's possible Mayweather's douche bag attitude is wearing thin. His last fight with Marquez probably didn't help either.

I don't know why so many were expecting huge 2 million+ numbers or record breaking numbers. Tyson could not even break 2 million and we all know how he captured the imagination of the North American public. Same with ODLH, who was another who had mass appeal.

Floyd and Manny are doing very well for themselves and can sell PPV's. They simply are not quite at that level where Tyson and ODLH were, and if they fought each other they would get about 1.5-1.8 million buys. They will not break any record though.

Anything over a Million buys for either of them against other opponents is huge this day and age. Don't buy the promotional press hype.
