Toney Camp offers to fight Vitali at 60 / 40

In an interview with **********, Dan Goosen is claiming that Toney accepted to fight Vitali for a 60/40 split in Vitali's favor, backing off from his parity stance, but upping it a little from the 65/35 offer they received from Vitali.

The ball is in Vitali's court. If he elects to fight Maskiev instead of Toney at 60 / 40 there is really no defending him.

GL: A couple of weeks ago I spoke with you and James shortly after Vitali Klitschko expressed his interest in the Toney fight. Since then Vitali has become interested in fighting Oleg Maskaev on September 24. What happened with the Klitschko negotiations that caused them to move on from Toney to Maskaev?


"We made one mistake Greg, we accepted. I don't think Vitali thought James would be willing to fight him. As it relates to Oleg Maskaev, it's a typical move by Vitali. He's fighting someone that no one cares about. Fighting someone that doesn't do anything but hurt you and then you wonder why you don't sell tickets or PPV. It's because he doesn't want to take any risk."

GL: So when you say you accepted it does that mean that your intitial position which demanded parity changed ,and you accepted their 65-35 offer and then they reneged?

Dan Goossen: "No. What we've done is gone out there and said that we would accept the fight with better terms. But no matter what they said or we said, it's was all part of trying to make a deal happen."

GL: So do you believe Klitschko's intentions to fight Toney were merely smoke and mirrors?

Dan Goossen: "Well, we're going to find out. I'm going to tell you that after talking to James last week. I was supposed to hear back from Shelly (Finkel) last week but I didn't hear back from him because he was busy with Tyson. But after speaking with James we will accept a 60-40 split to fight them. And that's an offer that I'm making them right now. We're ready to prove our worth. The heavyweight division needs to move and James seems to be the leader as it relates to fighting the best and toughest out there. He always has been and he always will be."

"I got to give credit to Hasim Rahman. He also seems willing to fight everyone, and the same goes for Chris Byrd. I have a feeling that Brewster would too. The one trying to keep the donkey's in front of him is Vitali. It always has been. I think this is a situation of a fighter not trying to expose himself while trying to make as much money as he can. We all know that James Toney is at worst one of the biggest fights out there. When you go from the upper echelon to the third tier it's shameful. This is a man who beat Quinn Navarre and Sedrick Fields to earn the right to fight Vitali Klitschko?"

"At least Rid**** Bowe threw his belt in the trash. Vitali seems to pick up his opponents from there."

"As far as I'm concerned I'm putting an offer out there it's up to them whether they want to accept or decline it. James Toney is on board, we're ready to fight him 60-40. Now it's all up to whether or not he wants to go out there and prove his worth. To sit there and have him fight Maskaev, I mean, I'm surprised he hasn't gotten Kevin McBride. Vitali needs to stop claiming that he is the best because the best don't act like this."

This is huge mismatch....Tyson couldnt hit McBride flush on the chin and Tyson is a puncher...Toney will have mega problems with Vitali...Toneys what 5'9, 5'10...Vitali is 6'7...Toney will be KOed for the 1st time in his career...

Interesting... incidentally, Maskaev was originally scheduled to be Danny Williams's first opponent after Tyson, which should have given an indication of whether Williams could mix it at a lower contender level and potentially take on the likes of Ruiz. However, it was abandoned after they got a chance at big money with Vitali.

So Vitali's basically setting up a match with someone who was regarded as a "risky but acceptable" option for a man who he effortlessly outclassed in eight rounds.


Having said all that... by the time this fight gets around Vitali will have been out of the ring for the best part of a year, following injuries. So isn't it reasonable that he has an easy comeback bout?

I'm guessing that Vitali started talking about Oleg to get Toney's camp to come off that 50/50 talk. 60/40 is fine in my opinion to get the chance to shut Toney up once and for all. It may not be 65/35 but who the hell cares. If they have proof that they really made this offer and Vit doesn't jump at it then I will be the first Klit fan to critisize him and say that something is wrong.

...**** yeah it would, and it would also get him alot more respect for taking the fight and dropping Toney. I'm sure the WBC would allow Vit to take that fight in the interim because it's in the best interests of everyone. It sets up a bigger fight between Vit and the R/B winner, it gives legitimacy in a time when only ****ty fights seem to be made, and it starts to clear the heavyweight picture a bit. Toney either backs his bull**** once and for all or we probably see the end of his ugly ass mug. Vitali should be at the table negotiating this one ASAP.

June 17, 2005 - Moments ago Vitali Klitschko's advisor Shelly Finkel responded to our interview with Dan Goossen by basically telling us that Goossen was full of it. At first Team Klitschko offered Toney 35% of the pot, only to have Goossen and Toney respond by demanding parity on **********. Finkel explained that after Toney demanded 50-50 Team Klitschko offered Toney a $3M guarantee with a bonus if the fight took place for the WBC title. "When they came up with the 50-50, I tried to find another way to get it done and e haven't heard back from them since we offered the $3M." With Toney now willing to accept 60-40 does that change anything regarding Klitschko's next fight? According to Finkel it's highly doubtful "because we're already pretty far along with the other (Maskaev) fight." Stay tuned to ********** for all the latest.
