Now the next thing that we know is that in order to beat Canelo, you need to seriously outwork him. Bivol threw over 700 punches, had nearly double the connects, but still only got 115-113 cards. Floyd threw only 505, but connected at a 46% rate, while holding Canelo to 22%. Canelo regularly averages over 550 a fight. Bud averages in the low 400 range over his last several fights. He's even more economical than Canelo, and that's fighting guys without the punching power of Canelo. So he's going to have to be on his bike for 12, carrying more weight and taking heavier punches, but he's going to have to up his output by at least 20 percent. And he's effectively up 3 divisions, and against a guy who's likely to be up by 3 rounds before the fight even starts. Canelo is used to fighting guys with a reach advantage AND a weight advantage, and is able to bully them anyways. And Crawford gets hit. Madrimov landed on him at 30.5% rate while holding him to 21.9%. Spence landed 20%, and 34.2% of his power punches, while getting his career ending beatdown. Even Avanesyan landed 22.4% of his power punches. Porter landed 26.5% of his power punches. Canelo landed close to 30% of his power punches vs Mayweather and Bivol, and usually lands closer to 50% of his power punches (40% vs Charlo, who was in survival mode the whole fight).
So the numbers indicate this is a very tall order for Bud, that should certainly put him in the history books if he can win. You can talk all you want about styles and skills, but Bud, as it stands, doesn't throw enough punches to outwork Canelo, and you can outwork Canelo and still lose to him if it's a small margin, because he's going to be coming forward, driving the action, and landing the more impactful shots. And Canelo has never even been knocked down, while Bud probably should have a knockdown from Mean Machine on his record. So he's very unlikely to hurt Canelo, while he's been hurt himself by a welterweight.
If he's going to do it, he'll have to do it behind a VERY active jab, on the back foot, as a southpaw. I'd prefer him to come in lighter than he did vs Madrimov (he was 169.8 on fight night, outweighing Madrimov) so he can have the foot speed and stamina to stay away from Canelo while pot-shotting every time Canelo isn't working. Canelo was weighing in at 172-4 when he was at 154. These days, he'll be in the 180's on fight night. Charlo was 172 and we saw what happened to him.
