Comments Thread For: BoxingScene Roundtable: How can boxing make improvements that start in 2025?

As we head into 2025, boxing as always finds itself with more to do. There is hope and optimism; huge cards, the appearance of Netflix, more on Amazon Prime, and possibly a new direction for Top Ranks output could all wind up with positive implications, but here are a few things the BoxingScene team hopes boxing might be able to do to move forward and into the New Year

The only truly necessary improvement is judging.

Otherwise, just keep putting fighters in a ring in a venue in front of cameras

Take 1% of all purses of every professional fight, and reinvested at the junior/amateur level.

Did Canelo steal Owen Lewis’ girlfriend or something? He really has an agenda against him. If super middleweight has ground to a halt don’t blame Canelo’s “chicanery,” blame it on the other top 10 fighters who sit around not fighting each other. What’s stopping Mbilli from facing Pacheco like the IBF mandated? Baby nuts and a risk-avoiding mindset.

As for ESPN, one of the things that made HBO Boxing great was that they didn’t have an exclusive agreement with any one promoter. They would televise fights from all of them, be it Top Rank or Golden Boy or K2 etc. ESPN should use their money and platform to do the same.

Elliot Worsell: Promoters need to build from the ground up again, otherwise the sport will be left with an extremely shallow pool of talent in the next few years. Too much short-termism, greed and laziness on the part of promoters has created an almighty chasm between the flashy, outsourced stuff at the top level and everything else and one can’t help but wonder if this new business model - so shortsighted and entirely dependent on a single country’s wealth - will effectively kill boxing at the grassroots level.

This is wrong on so many levels. The problem with the "next generation" of talent is NOT greedy or lazy promoters, its fighters who wont fight a live body unless they are paid generational wealth. I DO however fault promoters for letting fighters get away with it.............

            Wishlist:

Disciplinary rules and actions for bad judges.

Some kind of camera standards so I don't have to watch a fight looking down from the ceiling or over a judge's shoulder.

No more venues that are barely lit or lit with ****** bright red or uv lights.

            Get rid of two belts.

Drop people in rankings who don't fight in 9 months.

Remove people from rankings who don't fight for a whole year. Then they have to work back up. Then we'll see how many fighters stay inactive.

Top 10 fighters have to fight top 10 fighters in order for the fight to count for rankings and activity.

Top 10 fighters who turn down fights with other top 10 fighters drop in rankings to #11.
