Comments Thread For: The Beltline: Ben Whittaker and the futility of trying to assess a boxer's pain

In keeping with the style of today, there was a suggestion on October 12 that Ben Whittaker had SWALLOWED his light-heavyweight fight against Liam Cameron and that his DECISION not to continue after a CRAZY tumble out of the ring left his opponent and many others OUTRAGED!

This article defending Whittaker is almost as pathetic as what happened. We watched it, I don't need an article saying I don't know what I saw. Whittaker quit. Cameron agreed. This article is trying to pretend like it's debatable if Whittaker was really hurt. No. It's not debatable. Elliot Worsell if you're reading this, this is a bad article and it insults my intelligence as a viewer. I know what I saw.

An easy solution to all of this would to have an MRI scan made public, which with the PR machine Whittaker has behind him they would’ve done instantly.

The guy took the easy way out, and if he never rematches then he’ll set that in concrete.

You just proved the point of the article. You don't know if Whitaker was hurt or not , unless you're a psychic and psychics don't exist. Of course Cameron is going to say that Whitaker quit. He doesn't know either though. You can only assume , and that's no doubt colored by your opinion of Whitaker before the fight even started. The only one who knows is Whitaker. The rest of us are assuming , and you know what they say about that. You insult your own intelligence by pretending to know something that you can't possibly know.

Nah, you just have the same dumb take as the article.

He spit out his mouthpiece, tried to take a drink of water during that exchange and the ref had to tell him to stop. Then his punches starting hitting low over and over until the ref told him it was his final warning. Then he grabbed Cameron and dragged both of them over the ropes. It was clear as day. He was looking for a way out of the fight before they ever went over the ropes. It was obvious before the replay that there would be no angle that showed an injury. The article never mentioned any of this, which is part of why it's a bad article.

It's not even worth debating because clearly you have given him the benefit of the doubt or something. But I know what I saw. Being told I cannot know something I saw clear as day is insulting. Feels like I'm being lied to.

First point, Elliott Worsell is an atrocious writer. MoFo tries be clever, thinks he's an intellectual. You are a bum Worsell, lower than Dan Brown & you can't get lower than the DaVinci Code. Second, I can't & nobody can, know how bad Whittaker's pain was or if he could've carried on. I can say Whittaker was getting beat in there & I can say that as soon as Cameron began firing back Whittaker's whole sorry-ass charade of being the black-country Naseem unravelled like a carpet from the cheapest stall in Sparkhill. Did he quit? I dunno. Is he through? I should say so.

The worst article i’ve had the misfortune of reading on this website. Dreadful. It’s entire premise is completely misfounded from the outset and what sort of journalist uses large letters ffs???

It is absolutely, 100% possible to determine that whittaker deliberately threw himself over the ropes and also that he dragged Liam with him. He literally threw his head back to push his balance that way and what sort of idiot would drag his opponent with him risking greater injury rather than put their hands out to break their own fall unless their intent was absolutely to duck out of the fight. Perhaps if virtually every ex boxer with their actual experience of the game has said exactly the same, they might actually be correct.

Suggest the author gets another career as, if his interpretation of movement is so poor he can’t read a situation like this clearly, he shouldn’t be commentating professionally on boxing. I hope the site didn’t pay him for this junk.

...nobody knows how it feels to fall the way Whittaker did on Saturday...
What makes you so sure he didn't throw himself (and his opponent) out of the ring (and faked an injury)?
