Mayweather and PAC unintentionally hurt boxing badly

Mayweather hurt boxing because he made future fighters infatuated with huge paydays. The difference is that Mayweather worked, sacrificed and grinded his way to becoming Money May. And even then, he was fighting the best out there. People forget about how commentators used to throw dirt on his name about how he was p4p #1 but he wasn’t a draw. Mayweather was ducked by the top fighters/promoters because he was high risk/low reward, including Mosley and Cotto(Bob Arum) who he beat later. Fighters only see the rewards of Floyd and skip past wanting to put in the work. They choose the easiest competition available and don’t care anything about their resume. Bud is a perfect example. The best don’t want to fight the best, they want winnable fights for big money.
Pacquaio hurt boxing because IN PART his name was built off being attached to Mayweather. Now these fighters do the same without building their own legacy. Benavidez attached to Canelo. Shakur attached to Tank. Bud was attached to Spence. THE DIFFERENCE is that Pac actually fought the best fights and built his own legacy without needing Mayweather. But these fighters don’t do that, they keep relevance by attaching their name to the more popular fighter, and take c and b level fights until hopefully they get a fight with the more popular fighter. They want the big buildup like Mayweather-Pacquiao and the huge payday but they want to cherry-pick their way to it.
Boxing is dying and guys like Jake Paul can come and do better numbers than actually champions because boxing is so weak. It’s weak because these guys just won’t fight the best.
Its the other way around, Floyd was attaching his name to Pacquiao who was coming from the micro weight divisions, and beating up legit fighters, while Floyd was biding his time fighting stylistic favourable matchups against natural LW sized fighters like Guerrero, JMM, and ex 140lber Victor Ortiz fight that nobody called for, and acting like a fool on 24/7 to stay relevant.Last edited by Haka; 09-22-2024, 03:20 PM.El_Mero likes this.

He was unhappy with TR and they were tired of him, which is why he bought out his contract for only 750k. Floyd made one of the best business decisions in boxing. He left TR, got the DLH fight, and became a star. After that, TR blocked every one of their fighters from Floyd. Margarito went on to get exposed as a cheat and knocked out by Mosley, then Floyd beat Mosley.
"Flat turned him down like you can not believe," Arum said of Mayweather when he was offered a chance at the WBO title
it was never about the money. it was always about opponent control. he had plenty of opportunities to fight the top rank guys and avoided them at all costs. whatever was offered was just never enough even though he took other fights for much less. for example he asked for 10 million to fight marg and cotto...thats the same amount he got to fight hoya. not going to happen. we know he wasnt scared of hoya because he fought him, that was just an extra poison pill. we know he did not fight cotto or marg when he had the power to do it. he didnt fight them when he was with top rank instead choosing lesser opponents for less money. he didnt fight them when he left top rank and had total opponent control.
top rank blocked their fighters from floyd? just making things up now i see. floyd said "i wont work with top rank" so thats the exact opposite of reality.
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SAYS HE WILL NEVER WORK WITH BOB ARUM AGAIN
oh guess what? he happily worked with top rank when pac was old and knocked out. coincidence i guess...so as you can see Floyd blocked himself from fighting those guys and he admitted it. it was never about top rank. thats called an excuse. top rank literally tried to make the pac fight for years but floyd kept goalpost moving: drug testing, then 14 days is ok, then 0 days is ok, then flat offer of 40 million only. thats called bluffing my good sir and his bluff got called, but to your point that top rank wouldnt work with him? just flat out wrong, it was the opposite and it was because they had good fighters as we saw him work with top rank when it was safe enough
yep thats called cherry picking. wait until an old guy scores an upset then fight the old guy instead of the guy who was #1 for 4+ years. floyd had 5 years to fight margarito but couldnt find the time!!! 40 year old mosley scores an upset and hes on it. sharmba mitchell for less money? yep. judah for less money coming off a loss? yep. unknown baldomir for less money instead of a mexican star? yep. tiny hatton for the same money? yep. retirement insteead of marg? yep. marg coming off the biggest win of his career over cotto? nope. tiny marquez.Last edited by daggum; 09-22-2024, 04:11 PM.El_Mero likes this.

Them fighting common opponents so people could compare, the opportunity for tribalism/fanboying and the drawn out road to them fighting each other, all of that helped BOTH of them drawing power wise. It created a compelling narrative. Notice how Pacs average PPV numbers halved after the Floyd fight and Floyds final serious boxing match a few months later only did 400k buys?
Lets not forget the role Oscar played in elevating both of them too.

Floyd/Pac CARRIED boxing for ****ing years, they didnt hurt it. If it hadnt been for them the UFC which was at its absolute peak at the time would have trampled boxing by the early 2010s. What exactly in boxing that didnt involve either Floyd or Pac was drawing big numbers from 2007-2015? those two ensured that boxing was getting big genuinely big 1 mil+ drawing fights 3-4 times a year through that time period.
