Comments Thread For: Mexico and Puerto Rico: The friendliest of vicious rivalries

On 8 June 1969, the soccer teams of El Salvador and Honduras met in the first leg of a two-legged tie to qualify for the following year's World Cup. The game took place in the shadow of growing tension between the neighbors; and after Honduras won the game, which took place in its capital Tegucigalpa, 1-0, Salvadoran fans set fire to the stadium

Nice read Kieran. Unfortunately, you describe ealier matchups that were evenly competitive, something no one expects to see this weekend, the Mexico- Puerto Rico clash that nobody asked for...

This would be like grabbing one of those fights off of ESPN were the one guy is on elite status and the other guy is just there to showcase the elite guy's talents (in wrestling its called a jobber lol) only this is being done on a grand PPV scale with a P4P elite going down in quality of an opponent and is meant to bamboozle Mexicans and Puerto Ricans along with other boxing fans alike into parting with there Hard Earned Money. This is far from the Mex vs PR rivalry in that list provided and it's still being shoved down peoples throat.

This is like prime Hulk Hogan vs The Disco inferno or Norman Smiley (AKA the big wiggle) lol

You got it! I was convinced Zarate was going to win going into that fight but Gomez was a class above and made quick work of the Mexican KO artist.

Mexico clearly has the dominance; except for when Trinidad and Cotto got some wins, although I didn't check how many times they fought a Mexican and won.

It’s usually the Mexicans that come out on top in big showdowns and in the clutch.

I can only think of a handful of fights where a Puerto Rican took out a Mexican’s ‘0’ in big showdowns, while I can think of SEVERAL of the opposite.

Off the top of my head:

Sal Sanchez hands Gomez his first loss
Margarito hands Cotto and Kermit Cintron his first loss
Jorge Arce hands Vasquez, Jr. his first loss
Salido hands Juanma Lopez his first loss
Giovanni Segura hands Calderon his first loss
Jose Luis Ramirez hands Edwin Rosario his first loss
Andrew Cancio hands Alberto Machado his first loss
And I can’t remember who it was exactly but convicted murderer Felix Verdejo also took his first loss from a Mexican

                On the flip side:

Tito Trinidad handed De La Hoya, Yory Boy Campas and Fernando Vargas their first losses.
Wilfredo Gomez handed Carlos Zárate his first loss

                My brain is fried.

There’s plenty more if I hit google but these were the first ones that came to mind on both sides.

Mexico vs PR is historic but trying to utilize that to sucker in the simpletons is a weak move. This is Mexico vs Brooklyn NY.
