Comments Thread For: 'Make pay-per-views free to combat piracy'

In response to questions of how fight fans are supposed to effectively budget a monthly stream of pay-per-view fights that usually threaten to reach the $100 threshold, Saudi Arabia's Turki Alalshikh has proposed an offer to slash pay-per-view prices to $20

Thank you Chris Algeri for not referring to the Turkey guy as his Excellency like so many ball washers in the business are currently doing.

If he continues to make extravagant threats to the marketplace, it's going to bite back. His behavior is beyond anti competitive, if he starts fixing prices, he is going to get sued by the Justice Department. It's inevitable, not that he needs to do business in the United States, but if he carries on like he can't be touched, his biggest marketplace will be gone. He needs to chill. As fu$$ked up as PPV pricing is, it's the price in a free and fair market, the powers that be won't stand for someone upsetting that delicate balance.

If they're free , they aren't Pay Per Views. If they think that they're only losing 30% to piracy , I have some beachfront property in Iowa to sell them, it even comes with a bridge.

Majority of the fights on PPV would be on HBO boxing after dark shows back in the day. These guys don’t really have a vehicle to build them up before being on PPV shows.

Back in the day guys like Oscar, Floyd, Pacquiao, and Canelo would have fights on HBO or Showtime to get the casual audience to know them before being out on PPV. HBO getting out of boxing really hurt the sport.

I believe affordable pricing would help generate more pay per view buys; Especially among casual fans.

However, a crook is a crook. If they can watch a fight for free. Then why would they pay for it?

They would just still manage to circumvent by not paying for it anyhow.

Chris is b-ang on with this, fights have to be the here and now , the top fighters in the sport need to be fighting each other as the 'top' fighters otherwise you get something similar to the joke fights of Jake Paul v Mike Tyson , which is really a kind of fantasy fight joke setup. If we're not careful Turki will be looking at a Bowe v Lewis fight. Some fights don't happen , but Turki should use the Saudi money to see that the fights that are the best in the sport get made and not just the 'romantic, I wonder who would have won in their prime fights. If Fury beats Usyk and Joshua beats DD. then I'm sure it could be on the cards , but personally , if Fury beats Usyk in another close war then I would much sooner see Fury v Usyk 3 !
