Comments Thread For: On anniversary of William Joppy-Roberto Duran, Manny Pacquiao flirting with a pointless remake

"There's something genuinely tragic about a gifted, poverty-stricken kid who can make $50m, only to end up fighting as a sad, slow-moving grandfather because he can't pay his tax bill." Those words appeared 26 years ago in Boxing News, and we revisit them this week for two reasons: First, because this Wednesday, August 28, marked the anniversary of the fight about which they were written; and second, because this unmerciful sport of ours is threatening to make those words echo in heartbreaking fashion again soon.

Fair article, on the mark, Manny has no business in the ring, and those pushing for the fight do not care about his well being, only their pockets.

Full circle back to "Merciless Manny".

Literally would kill himself to show poor people they have hope

      Keep punching

All these years later I still remember the psychic pain I had watching a middling talent like Joppy humble Duran . I couldn’t stand Joppy acting like he had accomplished a great fete . I loved Tito bringing him back to reality.

Unfortunately the main one that doesn't care about Manny's well being is ... Manny. And yes he is very much thinking about his pockets.

I'm kinda torn on this one being as though Joppy is a DC guy. I was front row center during the 90s for all the great MW fights that passed through DC. That was the beginning of the reign of the Xecutioner. I remember going to the Show place arena in Upper Marlboro, Md (right outside DC) to witness B Hop vs Andrew Council. I went to all the fights at the newly built MCI center (and DC armory) in downtown DC for years to watch the likes of William Joppy, Winky Wright, Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson, Maurice Blocker, Chop Chop Corley, Lamont Peterson, Keith Holmes, Sharmba Mitchell, Mike Tyson and many more. Those were the days. I was conflicted in this fight because although I was a HUGE Joppy fan I was always a Duran fan and couldn't believe a guy that was KOing people out in the 70s was still fighting for a world title in 1998. But I'll say now what I said then...if you get in that ring then you can expect to receive whatever that ring has to offer.

I watched Holmes vs. Ali as a "poverty-stricken" African American youth. It was devastating to watch "The Champ," get brutalized by Larry Holmes! Manny, those kids don't need to see that!
