Dawson vs Cloud: The Waiting is The Hardest Part

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - OK… now I get it.

While chatting last week with Tavoris Cloud, I took much of his “Chad Dawson doesn’t want to fight me” rambling as routine verbal chest-thumping from one fighter toward another.

    You know the drill.

“He’s afraid of me.” “He knows I’ll beat him.” “He’s running scared.”

It’s a rant that anyone who interviews boxers for a living has heard a thousand times, and one that anyone who reads boxing stories as a hobby has read a thousand more.

After Friday night, though, I’m thinking a little differently.

Maybe, just maybe… ol’ Tavoris has a point.

Upon watching a one-sided 12-round mugging of brave veteran Clinton Woods, I’m not so sure Dawson’s decision to steer clear of Cloud was based solely on business acumen.

No question, the IBO champion will cash a check with a few more zeroes against Glen Johnson this fall than he would have had he decided to keep the IBF belt and face Cloud as his mandatory.

The Johnson rematch, after all, is one fans have been calling for since the “Road Warrior” gave “Bad Chad” all he wanted in a spirited 12-rounder in Tampa in April 2008.

Johnson is a two-decade fan favorite who’s been in with the best of three weight classes, beaten several and has been entertaining more often than not in doing so.

Meanwhile Cloud, prior to Friday night’s featured slot on basic cable, was a comparatively inactive prospect that few non-hardcore fans had even heard of, let alone seen. [details]

Cloud is entertaining to watch, but I think Dawson is out of his league. He takes too much damage.

They say Cloud fights like Lacy, I'm afraid Dawson will do a Calzaghe on Cloud.

Fighting Cloud over Johnson would just cause fans to say Dawson is ducking Johnson.

Next thing you know, boxing fans will start complaining about why didn't Dawson fight them both in the same ring at the same time.

he fights nothing like lacy in my opinion..lacy was one dimensional as they come...cloud on the otherhand is not, he works behind a jab, places his punches, has a good chin, and has shocking power. his defense isnt as leaky as it looked in the woods fight, that was caused from the 12 month layoff in my opinion..cause i watched his fight with gonzalez and although gonzalez isnt as good as clinton woods there skillevel isnt to far apart..and gonzalez struggled to land on cloud with anything..and this kid isnt even fully matured yet.

If Dawson had taken the Cloud fight over the Johnson fight and won which he probably would have at this point no one would have cared and said he beat a nobody with a good record. The better Cloud looks and the more active he is the more credit and money both can get from a future fight....This one won't happen until it makes $ense.

I thought there were moments in the Woods fight where Cloud was ready to start giving in, but he stayed determined and re-took control every time. I give him credit for that. But Dawson is a whole other level from Woods. Would be a good fight to watch.

Put simply, Chad really does not have much to gain from fighting Cloud. Should he fight him? Sure, but would a fight against Cloud be more meaningful for Chad's career than say, a fight with Kessler? or the winner of the Sup 6 tourney? How bout a fight against Hopkins?

If Dawson plans to stay in LHW, then he MUST fight Cloud. But if he feels he has the felixibility to go down to SMW again, Cloud would be the least appealing financially, but msot important, to me at least, legacy wise.

I would like Cloud to get the WBA belt also. I believe Dawson if he beats Johnson will fight Pascal. Then the winner can meet in a unfication bout. I enjoyed Cloud last Friday. But I really believe Dawson will jab him to death
