on the white South African point, if they were born and bred in Africa, their father was born in bred in Africa and his father before that, and his father before that, then they sure as hell ain't European, take that from a European
I never said that they were European. But they do have European ancestry.

And yes, a lot of people misinterpret the term, but it doesn't change the real meaning of it.

technically they are...since they're from africa...

you are right though... the term doesn't apply to them though when people think of african americans.....

so do the majority of black Americans yet they, according to your definition, are entitled to the term African-Americans yet a white South African living in the US does not despite the fact the white South African may well have had generations of ancestors who were born and bred in Africa.

And yes, a lot of people misinterpret the term, but it doesn't change the real meaning of it.
as far as I see it there is no official meaning as defined by law and no true boundaries of usage.

What you're describing as the 'real meaning' is in essence an ad hoc definition of the term which not only exempts North Africa, it exempts South Africans with European ancestry dating back a quite a few generations.

i guess we should use the term European Americans for white people.

                    Taken from Yahoo answers.

Did we ALL come from Africa? My history teacher said the other day that all of our ancestors were black?
I'm simply curious. Since i never heard that theory before and im wondering if she was right or not. For me its kinda hard to imagine Irish people who are pretty pale, to come from black ancestors from africa...
oh hehe and the teacher was african american but thats not the point i just want to know Do we all come from Africa, or it was more of a Continent Division, where Europeans come from Europe and so on...
                    thank u)
p.s. i hope there are gonna be no cry babies who will call me racist. lol just want to see wether or not my teacher knows more than i do:P

Hmm your teacher may be right. She might've heard snippets of information about recent discoveries like this:
                    ...

If the Out of Africa Theory is correct, which it seems it is. The first human beings almost certainly were dark skinned to protect them from the Sun's dangerous UV rays. As they migrated North, the lack of a evolutionary need for dark skin allowed people to migrate farther north. So the lighter the people were, the farther north they could migrate and develop other features like pinched straight noses to inhale cold air better.

So if this is true, which it certainly appears to be, 120,000 years ago... your ancestors had dark skin. Then as they migrated north, they gradually became lighter through natural selection because Modern **** Sapiens Sapiens earliest skeletons and artifacts have been found in East Africa.

                    Proposed Migration Route: ...

an article to help you out too:...

I've never understood the necessity of the word African in African American when generation after generation has been born here. My ethnicity and racial make up is that of Latin descent, so I am Puerto Rican by blood but I am an American when it comes down to it. Doesn't the same logic apply here?
