no doubt, but the term African-American was introduced in modern America, it would seem strange if it were to exclude North Africa.

In fact, white South Africans who move to America can justifiably be considered African-American because I heard of a guy who put that down when applying for a job. He said he got a strange look but they couldn't argue with it because it was true.

Note that the word is HYPHENATED. "African" and "American", aren't separate. It is a single idea.
so you're saying the term African-American only refers to sub-saharan Africans and not North Africans. Do you have any authority to support that?

also that being the case, it would also refer to white South Africans etc, since they're from sub-saharan area.

African Americans or Black Americans are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black populations of Africa.[5] In the United States, the terms are generally used for Americans with at least partial Sub-Saharan African ancestry.

But white South Africans originated from Europe. Their ancestry isn't predominantly African.

the key word there is 'generally', it seems that in the US it all depends on who is using the term.

on the white South African point, if they were born and bred in Africa, their father was born in bred in Africa and his father before that, and his father before that, then they sure as hell ain't European, take that from a European
