He isn't from Africa necessarily. He was born here. His parents and there parents were also born here. So doesn't that just make him an American of a darker skin tone? I've never understood the necessity of the word African in African American when generation after generation has been born here. My ethnicity and racial make up is that of Latin descent, so I am Puerto Rican by blood but I am an American when it comes down to it. Doesn't the same logic apply here?

It's about race, he's an african descendant living in america and culturally he's an american, hence african-american.

i know what you mean man, everyone else should be catogarized as british-american, french-american also if they gonna have african-american, it's just ******, america is just a bunch of emigrants from europe and what not, and the real americans is the native indians, they should just learn to stick to callin them americans
