Great amateur, solid pro. He is undeserving of his undefeated record. Calzaghe had only 2 fights that were somewhat controversial, Ottke had about 5 or 6. This doesn't mean he wasn't a good boxer because he was, until 2002 he used to be rated above Calzaghe.
Some terrible judging and refereeing in this fight:
Which is why I have little respect for Ottke. Pre-Lacy Calzaghe was regarded as a protected fighter. But there's protected and there's PROTECTED. The deck was loaded against any fighter traveling to Germany.
Plus Ottke never fought out of germany. And the protection he got was laughtable from the judges.
I remember when Robin Reid fought him. The ref threatened to disqulify Reid for laying a glove on Ottke. Reid was paralyzed with fear of even touching Ottke, that is how much protection Ottke got.
Reid was thinking how am i supposed to beat Ottke if my gloves are not allowed to touch any part of his body or head?
A lot of Sven's pro fights decisions were close and very controversial and many times could have went the other way, thats probably one for starters. Second, even though Joe took forever to do it, he did eventually travel abroad which Sven was so reluctant to do. And finally, I think Joe's resume just speaks volumes louder then Sven's, which could contribute to him not being ranked so high.
Calzaghe tried to make a fight with Ottke but Ottke said he wasn't interested. He never called out top fighters, whereas Calzaghe frequently did.
And "close and controversial" is putting it mildly - several were outright robberies. And the refereeing was villainous.

Dave - I had to laugh at this comment. Seriously that's hilarious. Anyway, to Ottke's credit, he also fought a lot of the top super middles before Calzaghe did, most of the time when they were still considered "good" (for what it's worth). Let's not forget that he was considered the world's best super middle, while Joe was #2 for many years.
