well, i think Calzaghe is simply the superior fight, skills-wise

his resume IS better than Ottke's

and he beat marquee names like Eubank, Hopkins, Jones Jr., Lacy and, yes, even Kessler was highly regarded at the time

and Ottke's legacy is tainted slightly by some of the robberies he got in his favour

Ottke-Reid was one of the most crooked fights ever seen. I almost smashed up my tv in anger when I was kid watching it. The ref was actually punishing Reid for hitting Ottke.

Ottke had some outstanding wins which some people forget. He even outpointed Glen Johnson without controversy. Heck I guess I watched nearly all Ottkes fights always hoping that he'd get GTFO but of course that never happened. The guy was so elusive and was nicknamed the ghost for a reason.

Resuméwise he might be a notch below Calzaghe, but he's still got an excellent record.
The Johnson he beat back then was nothing special, and it was a close fight. Johnson peaked unusually late in his career, around '04.

Ottke's had a few wins that could have went either way and some daylight robberies. Calzaghe has had a close fight with Hopkins and Reid, the majority of people thought he won both. Even if Ottke did win all of his fights without controversy it still wouldn't stack up to Calzaghe's resume.

Some terrible judging and refereeing in this fight:
So you agree he had a better SMW resume ? Lol.

What's funny is that when both were active and in their primes, Ottke was ranked higher. Calzaghe was thought to be good but unproven--and also known for fighting Ottke leftovers.

No doubt Ottke got some homecooking but he fought most of those guys first, if Joe fought them at all. And he was considered the world's best super middle, right or wrong.

As overall fighters with all what they accomplished, Calzaghe will be remembered as a better fighter and will have the better legacy.

But if were just talking about there Super Middlweight days, there isn't really alot in it.

Both were never defeated as Super Middlweights. Both made same amount of defences of their Title (21). And both beat alot of the same oppostion. And Ring ****zine would rank them different each month at to who would be number #1. And both rarely fought out of thier native homelands.

Now here's why I belive Calzaghe was the better fighter at the weight. Calzaghe unifed the division something Ottke never did or attempted, Calzaghe may have had off night's, but he beat his competition alot more convincinley than Ottke ever did.

And most of all Calzaghe defeated the better names at the weight, and if the two would of ever fought I think Calzaghe would of dominated him.
