I think people are missing something about the Williams/Cotto matchup.

Southpaws are extremely vulnerable to the left hook to the body, which ends up in the kidney area. I think Williams would outwork Cotto most of the fight, as long as it lasts, and if it goes past about 8 or 9, he has a chance to stop Miguel on an accumulation of punches, or outwork him to a decision. But Cotto has one seriously good left hook to the body. Paul's chin has shown itself to be pretty solid so far. But what about his body? And there's no way to build up muscle over the kidney area.

I think southpaws are better at neutralizing left hooks to the body than orthodox fighters.

Ive said this before but ill say it again... someone like paul williams throws so many punches that he is left open to get hit several times a round. Even winky got a couple good shots in each round. And with a puncher like Cotto this fight is far more complicated then "paul williams outworks cotto to a late ko or UD"

i dont recall ever seeing anyone being able to land too many hooks on a southpaw. almost every time a southpaw is being discussed, the main punch that is mentioned as the "kryptonite" per se, is the straight right hand. of course, anything could happen. i prefer cotto over williams but given williams workrate and sheer determination, its tough seeing how cotto can win this. HOWEVER, the cotto that fought margarito would beat williams hands down.
(we have yet to see if marg has actually ruined cotto, we'll find out in the clottey fight so i think we can all make a more accurate assesment after June 13)

I'm a big fan of Cotto, but I don't really want to see him in there with Williams tbh.

              i do

i want to see how he plans on dealing with that freak of nature. for the record, no i dont think williams is a God but you cant deny that his physical attributes coupled with his stamina and workrate arent a handful

Exactly, I'm just seeing way to many "Cotto doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell" posts these days.

Left hooks to the head no, as the lead hand is usually held a bit higher than the other. But left hooks to the body on a guy that throws so many punches (and therefore leaves himself wide open to the body,) is a different story.

the cotto that fought margarito was broken down, by the same margarito that williams beat.....

ppl forget the huge speed advantage cotto had over margarito, and until he tired from the abuse he took in return, cotto was able to stick and move....

paul williams is no margarito, he hits just as hard if not harder, has unbelievable stamina, has a great chin, and is much, much faster than margarito..... i.e. cotto won't be able to "stick and move" away from paul, as he was able to do against margarito for a while.

it'll be a great, action-packed fight, but PW beats cotto in the same fashion margarito did, except the corner doesn't throw in the towel, the REF stops the fight.....and there won't be any "plaster" excuses.

i dont blame cotto for not taking the fight, the dude is like 6.4 or 6.5, why would you take on a man like that if he has no money to offer?
