I know a lot of people from Columbus... my good friend, former two-time opponent and one of the great amateurs of all-time Darin Allen is from there as is my man Jerry Page, 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist at 139. Vonzell Johnson is still training amateur boxers there, too, from what he tells me. I used to be friends with Tony Snow (RIP). Broderick Harper, Troy Speakman. Columbus is/was home to many boxers I know and/or am friends with.
thats whats up!!!! I've heard/know about Darin Allen, Jerry Page, and Troy... my 1st boxing coach Steve Gregory talked about them
Vonzell is actually my current coachs cousin Mike Johnson!! (he fought Tommy Hearns in the ams; great great coach) Vonzell was just with us a couple weeks ago at a fight in Zanesville.... but thats crazy!
it'd be cool as hell if we were ever all at the same fight...... hopefully one day we can meet.... im sure your at a lot of am fights so im sure i'll see you sooner or later.
Mike Johnson didn't just fight Tommy Hearns...he BEAT Tommy at the Ohio State Fair.
As for Darin Allen...Darin had a spectacular amateur career that saw him beat three Olympic gold medalists, including Steve McCrory, Frank Tate and Henry Maske.
Wassup Ice, how you doing? just had a quick question, do you think it's possible for a 23 year old man to start Boxing (hasn't EVER done it or tried it) do you think it's possible to start from the floor up at 23 years old and be successful in the long run? if so, as a trainer, how would you go about making it happen, what would you make him do?
..also, I know this one guy man he's pretty good, I mean really he is just naturally gifted at fighting man, he fought Sechew Powell and Luis Collazo in the amatuers and has sparred many rounds with Frankie Figueroa. this particular guy is related to a former 2 time golden glove champion, he's 27 though and has yet to turn pro, do you think if he turned pro(with the right support of course) he could be successful? he's anywhere from 140-160 and he's 5'10 with a lot of power but even more speed, he already knows how to fight he would just need to turn it up and improve conditioning.. at 27 do you think there is still time for him?
As for Mr . Springer...you'd be surprised, man. A TV icon like that (everybody in the industry and out of it knows him well) , he's got pull, money and connections. Does Pacman know him? You better believe it!!! Don King and Arum have to ultimately answer to someone, of course... there are people behind the scenes in everything, from the Government to big corporations, SOMEONE has to be in charge and for the last 25 or so years, well before he became a TV personality, Jerry Springer has been running the boxing world (with an iron fist!)

your opinion would help a lot bro, peace.
Well, Clay-Bey started at 25 and ended up the captain of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team so, yeah, it's entirely possible for someone to make their mark even though they have started at a late age. Turning pro at 27 would be a situation where many other things would need to be done properly.
PROFESSIONAL boxing is not just about having power, heart, drive, special gifts etc... need a solid promoter and matchmaker...a manager to look out for him... etc etc... if you have the right people behind the scenes and you have the right tools and gifts in the ring then almost anything is possible, sure it is. But, remember, I am big advocate of not turning pro just to turn pro...you need the peopl ebehind the scenes with the know-how, the power, the juice to get things done properly...

You know what kills me and I don't even believe is really true but he says it.
Sugar Ray Leonard wasn't even going to turn pro at first. He swears that was the case.
