Steve Smoger is the best official in boxing in my opinion. When the man stops the fight, i have never disagreed with his decision. Taylor was done, and lifeless. He knew he was beat.
he was out he even asked if he got knocked out....the reason it looked early on live hbo is cuz the ref blocked the view of taylor when he slumed down..the way his head was he couldnt take more shots
I wanted Taylor to win that fight, but that was a great stoppage... Don't know how anyone could think other wise. I ain't going to blow smoke up anyones ass but I lost a bit of respect from Taylor when he lost to Pavlik. I picked him to beat Pavlik in the first fight, then I picked him in the second fight to beat Pavlik. And you know the story from there, I felt like Taylor had all the tools to beat Pavlik.
I thought Taylor edged out the win on the rematch. I was shocked, in fact, that Kelly won again.
After watching the fight over a year after it happened I'm starting to think ref Smoger jumped in too quickly. At the time I thought the stoppage was a good one because Taylor was clearly in distress but now I'm not so sure. Smoger should have given Taylor the chance to get up. Anyone think differently?
in my opinion he should have counted taylor as DOWN well before he was outcold...
he would have went down had it been in the middle of the ring well before he got knockedout by pavlik...the ring corner/post was holding him up...allowing pavlik to continue the assualt...
smoger should have ruled it as taylor was down (the ropes/cornerpost being the main object keeping him on his feet) and began the 10 count...
thats what i disputed from the moment that fight was over until now.
there was no standing 8 count rule in effect HOWEVER im not referring to the standing 8 count...he was clearly being held upright by the ringpost and ropes.
im not knocking smoger though...it was a live fight and you dont always have the time to stop/think/realize these things...
any other ref would have probably stopped it when pavlik went down and was running drunk around the ring for the rest of the round...but smoger (a good ref) seen pavlik wasnt getting hit cleanly with too many shots and it was just his balance not being back yet that caused him to stumble around...
Though there is an argument that Pavlik wasn't in round two either, he was like Bambi on stilts.
I'm not saying Taylor wasn't legitimately KO'ed but I think Smoger should have given him a count instead of laying on him. Maybe I'm old fashioned in that sense but I believe fighters especially undisputed world champs should have the benefit of a count. I think they've earned it.
