I thought so at the time but I agree with Easy that Smoger laying on Taylor gave him no chance to get up. Should the champion be given the benefit of the doubt?
yeah i guess he coulda given him 8 seconds. Taylor was a noodle in that corner.
might the first time in his career that Smoger has been accused of stopping a fight early....
but Taylor did look pretty much done tho
I'm not disagreeing that Taylor wasn't hurt because he clearly was, but maybe Smoger could have given the former champ a chance to get up. If Taylor gets up and Pavlik finishes him then there's no questions but practically holding Taylor down and waving it off without a count is unusual for a "fight referee" to do in a high profile title bout. I think Smoger should have given Taylor a count.
i agree with most everyone here. good stoppage. remember that the ref is the closest to the action. he has the ability to look right into a fighters eyes and see where they are at.

unusual especially since it was smoger...he usually waits til someone gets decapitated before he stops anything...a standing 8 (courtesy count for the champ) would have been acceptable but judging from taylor and his corner's non-protest, it might have been moot at that point
I can't believe people have the gall to question the stoppage. Guys don't get up when they fall face down, and guys don't get up when they slowly slump in the corner.
Should Hurtado have gotten a count against Whitaker?
