    Was Taylor-Pavlik 1 a quick stoppage?

After watching the fight over a year after it happened I'm starting to think ref Smoger jumped in too quickly. At the time I thought the stoppage was a good one because Taylor was clearly in distress but now I'm not so sure. Smoger should have given Taylor the chance to get up. Anyone think differently?

    Taylor was KNOCKED OUT COLD

    It was a good stoppage

I made a thread like this right after the race.
Smoger should have given Taylor 8 seconds to get up. Jumping in while Taylor was on the way down makes no sense.
It is very doubtful that Taylor was going to get up, but as a champion he deserved to try and make it to his feet.

The ref layed on top on Taylor so it's very unclear whether or not he could have gotten up.

If he didn't stop it Taylor woulda been even more KTFO'd. He might be dead right now. Good stop. You can read his lips and he's asking if he got knocked out.

He wasn't "out cold". Being out cold is when you're flat on your back and unaware of anything. Taylor was kinda dazed and slumped in a corner.

Regardless, it probably needed to be stopped. If Taylor had got up, Pavlik would have beat him back down. These kind of KO's are dangerous to any fighter's health, so Smoger probably did the right thing.

Absolutely. I wouldn't want anyone to interrupt my sleep the way Smoger did Taylor's. He should've gotten at least a half an hour.

I see your point but did you see the way that Taylor slumped down in the corner and didn't even get up? It would have been more interesting to give him the full count but it wouldn't have changed the outcome. Had the ref not jumped in when he did, Taylor might have eaten a few more power shots before he went down which would have been bad.

Taylor never argued that he should have gotten a full count either so that tells you something. He knows he got knocked out cold.

I thought so at the time but I agree with Easy that Smoger laying on Taylor gave him no chance to get up. Should the champion be given the benefit of the doubt?

Taylor was hurt and unable to defend himself before he went down, kind of like the opponent was in the infamous Emile Griffith fight.

It was a good call. Taylor never made any attempt to get up anyway and had no questions about the stoppage. Steve Smoger doesn't stop fights unless someone is really hurt.
