Don't forget that robinson fought Turpin at the end of a european tour where he had a few fight and shagged alot of Parisian whores. i'm not saying Turpin ain't good, but I am saying having the biggest scalp does not make him p4p king. i haven't seen enough of him (just his SRR fights and clips) to make a judgement, but he was thoroughly schooled in the rematch. Throwback fighters were more susceptible to bad days at the office, which IMO is what happened to SRR.
Actually Turpin was giving Robinson fits in the rematch: Turpin had an awkward style that made him difficult to hit cleanly. It was only after the referee told Robinson he was going to pull his plug at the end of the round that Ray made the desperation assault that finished Turpin.

Goldstein stopped the fight too early also Turpin should have taken a count.
Turpin was a good fighter but his career never really recovered from the Olson defeat.

Quite possibly given the era. Had it taken place today it might have been stopped earlier though. The thing is, Goldstein couldn't really see that most of Robinson's punches weren't actually landing. You can see it on camera but Goldstein didn't have the benefit of the view we spectators do on television. From his perspective it HAD to look like Turpin was taking a pummeling.

Yeah I know he was awkward and gave Robinson problems. I've only seen them two fights and clips from other ones so like I said before, I couldn't make a judgement either way. I am sure he is a British ATG, but anyone who puts fighters in their lists without seeing alot of their fights is just going by say so. Unless I have seen at least 10-20 of their majopr fights, I refrain from making judgements about them. I have seen a documentary on Turpin and it looks like the Inland Revenue did the same thing to him what the IRS did to Joe Louis. Tragic end for a national hero and world champion

The problem with that is it cuts out 75% of the ATGs and limits one to mostly post-1970 fighters for whom here is a lot of footage (there are exceptions such as Ali who has a ton of pre-1970 video available). This is why we have boxing historians to fill in the gaps in our knowledge where footage is lacking.

Has anyone mentioned the Ragamuffin man?

I always thought Jimmy Wilde was a cool guy from what I read about him and his record speaks for itself. Audley...... whatever. Lennox was good but no where near a great all -time. The raggamuffin man was a tough one.

I dont know if wales is considered in this but I always thought highly of Colin Jones. His fight with Curry, when he was halted by the ref because of the cuts and he was weeping in the corner as the announcers mentioned that this was probably his last shot at the title. I remember thinking of how hard he tried and how he never stopped trying against an extremely talented fighter. I felt for him as he wept and at a fairly young age saw that boxers are actually real people................Rockin'

Jimmy Wilde for me, due to the record and resume.

But from my era of watching boxing i'd have to go with Lewis.
