He wrapped his hands with electoral tape, which wasn't in the contract and that made his fist as hard a rock. That is proven.

After the fight ended Jeffries went over to shake Fitz's hand and asked to see his gloves as the didn't cut him up the last time. Fitz threw the gloves into the crowd like a guilty man would.

So Jeffries not only had to take Fitz's power, which in of itself was monstrous, he also had to deal with a rock hard wrapping concealed by 5 ounce gloves which were possible tampered.

In time the two went on tour in 1903 facing all comers and the names that history has forgotten, so Jeffries didn't hold a grudge.

The same kind that Jimmy DeForest claimed he wrapped Dempsey's hands with prior to the Jess Willard beatdown.

I don't know what to make of that. I guess I would think less of both Dempsey and Fitz if it was true.

travestyny might find it interesting to hear that there was another alleged instance of the use of that tape, though.
Unfortunately most of my detailed knowledge for fitzs comes from books about other people. Sundowners has quite a bit on him as does the Maher book by Dunnellon. Obviously without Pollack's Fitzs book I'm a bit in the dark.

This electrical tape I assume is quite different from modern tape. I believe, in this time frame, all there is available is latex of a form or another. So we're talking cotton or some such fabric dipped in a latex of some form?

I'm a Fitz fan. Boxing will never again see a lineal middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight champion claimed by one person.

He can be viewed on film for about 26 minutes vs Corbett, and a few rounds as a really older fighter vs Lang. I have my own personal blow by blow review of the film. Fitz set up the Ko with a high feint, then delivers a blow to the floating rib area, and floored it up with a hook not on film. Back then the paying audience at the theaters asked for rewinds of the Ko, and the excessive rubbing made the some of the frames left today un viewable.

Masters has the best stuff on Fitz. Fitz had a way of driving his punches through his target with his " shift "

Electrical tape today doesn't differ much from what was called electrical tape in 1903. Today its illegal to tape the knuckles, but in Fitz's day it wasn't. Some of the old time spanish trainers used to pile the tape up to a rock hard inch thick.

Jeffries camp became aware of the glove tampering but his trainer said let him go, we can whip him with or without it. Something close to that.

From March 1890 to Nov 1905, a near 15 year period he was only legitimately beat by James Jeffries, who had about 40 pounds on him.

Fitz had a thing for animals. He kept a bear cub for a while and according to this link owned a pet Lion.

Gunboat Smith also used electrical tape against Willard, and nearly ripped off his ear according to reports. That's one of the reasons Willard wanted no funny business with the wraps...only soft gauze and just enough tape to fasten the gauze.

Yet some people here tried to argue with me tooth and nail that the tape used wouldn't make a difference.

Threw the gloves into the crowd huh? Maybe Luis Resto should have tried that after his fight with Billy Collins.

Incredible fighter... A lightweight from the waist down, a super heavy from the trunk up (I am being tongue in cheek). One of those wiry fellows, all strength, very hard to fight... When I was fighting MA I dreaded this general build. Like fighting a freakin mouse trap! Explosive energy.

Fitz definitely did some amazing things in the ring. I agree about the footage. Dont always need a lot of footage to know how a guy operated.
