He either took a dive or simply gave up mentally. The occasion might have gotten to him, and this was one of the most important and biggest boxing matches of all time so it is likely.
But one thing is clear, it was a bizarre appearance from Schmeling who was a great boxer. Even the most rabid Louis fan who wants to reason it all on "Louis' greatness being the reason" can't deny that.
It was not even the shadow of the man who systematically destroyed Joe in the first fight. What we see in fight 2 is a punching bag who is not inside that ring to win. The way he grabs the ropes and is just moaning there leaning away from punches is bizarre and I have never seen anything like this in another world class boxing match.
Also strange is that while he is just on the ropes frozen taking full on power shots, he's taking several fully powered shots to the head without going down untill he takes a few too many. I don't know about you but if one of the hardest hitters ever gets free shots on an average chinned opponent, it should be lights out in seconds. Max not only took it all but was never close to going unconcious.
I don't think I'll ever be convinced otherwise. I don't think Louis was a hypejob, I think he's a legit ATG but still overrated. And one of the reasons is because he went 1-1 against Max at his best.

As I wrote, Schmelling's trainer/manager was ***ish, and Max apparently detested the ****s. He found a way out!
So he couldn't be used by those evil f***s.
Took immense courage!
Maybe he told Joe. They became lifelong friends and IIRC Max helped Joe out financially in later years when Joe got shafted by US Govt.
