Hard to say. I've looked into it a little bit and an iris can repair itself, but it depends on the severity of the injury. There is also surgery to help with this, again depending on the severity. We'll never really know since Billy Sr was looking for a big payout thru the lawsuit. Mentally I'm not sure Billy jr comes back from that kind of beating though.

      - -Dunno since the full Billy Collins story has been buried in the incompetence of the parties involved.

Obviously with his dad training him, as soon as he stepped to fringe contender level he was a KO in waiting. Been many more talented fighters done in when they stepped up.

      Boxrec offers little-

What always bothered me about the way it played out was Jr's refusal to associate with Sr. during that final year of Billy's life. It makes me wonder if the kid still wanted to fight and whether he was being told by one set of doctors (possibly connected to Top Rank) it was OK to fight while a different set of doctors (possibly connected to the law suit lawyers) were saying no your career is over.

I know I sound like a conspiracy nut but the way it played out makes it seem like there is more to this story we don't know about.

And I guess you're correct we won't know.

Maybe it was in the documentary"Assault in the ring" but I could swear I heard Jr wanted to fight and his father wanted to get a settlement from the lawsuit.

Yes I also believe it was in the documentary, but there lies the rub. That the kid wanted to keep fighting doesn't tell us the truth of the matter. The kid was a fighter and we all know fighters always think they can still fight. That's why I am wondering what the doctors were saying. You have to wonder if the kid was ever examined by any doctor who wasn't somehow connected to an interest.

I can't find anything on the doctor who examined him. But I did find this from 1984.

Good article thanks for posting it.

I was wrong, I thought they (father and son) were estranged but this article doesn't suggest that. Though it does suggest that the relationship was strained.

This article also now makes me think it wasn't suicide.

The thought that it was suicide IMO now seems out of the picture. I don't see the kid deliberately driving off the road with a friend in the car. People who off themselves don't (almost never) endanger others, especially friends. Suicide is a homicide predicated by self hate; an inward hate.

Resto comes across as a real piece of s-h-i-t, unless of course he was in some kind of denial regarding his own culpability. We both know (from the documentary) that things would turn out quite bad for him.

P.S. Yes, again we got no real details or insight regarding the medical situation.

In my opinion both Lewis and Resto got off easy. I think it's very obvious that Lewis took the horse hair padding out of the gloves, and Resto completely lied (I don't remember from the documentary) if he stuck with the story he didn't know the gloves we're tampered with. ANY fighter would know if the we're tampered with. 2oz from a boxing glove is a huge difference.

In the documentary he did admit he was aware of what Lewis did. He tried to dump all the blame on Lewis, but he was in very poor condition when he made the film and the filmmakers were exploiting him (and tried to exploit the Collins family as well, but hey wouldn't go along.)

You're right. But I can't feel any compassion for him, even if he was exploited. He shouldn't have gone through with it. At the very least he should have come clean after the fight when he was caught red handed.
