I always though Marciano was so far behind he needed a ko to win. Actually it was the reverse. After round 13 assuming Walcott got up from that ko blow before the ten count and lasted the round. HE needed the ko to win as Rocky had sealed the fight by winning the 13th.

Originally posted by HOUDINI563 View PostInterestingly the historical question overlooked by most experts was the story of the scorecards of the judges in the first bout between Rocky and Walcott.
Judge Zach Clayton had it eight rounds to four rounds for Walcott going into round thirteen. Scoring by the rounds system, this meant other than by knockout Rocky could not win the fight on this card.
However, Judge Pete Tomasco had it seven rounds for Rocky, five for Walcott. Referee Charlie Daggert had it seven rounds for Rocky to four for Walcott. Translated, it means if Walcott would have risen from the KD in round 13 and survived that round and the bout went the distance, Rocky would have won by 15 round split decision on the cards.
Walcott was ahead on only one scorecard going into round 13 with Rocky.
The statements Rocky had already lost the first Walcott bout on the scorecards at the moment he knocked Walcott out were completely false. Rocky, in winning the thirteenth round, had the fight won on the scorecards. Rocky did not leave the bout to the judges

Let's see! ()
On the WIKI page, at first blush the BoxRec scores look as if they have Marciano ahead.
As per tradition the champion's name is listed first in the fight, thus making it Walcott-Marciano I
The posted scores are then presented as follows.
Referee: Charley Daggert 4-7
Judge: Zach Clayton 4-8
Judge: Pete Tomasco 5-7
If one starts with the WIKI page I can see how one can be fooled into thinking Marciano was ahead. The page is poorly structured.
------------------------------------------------------------------
But on Walcott's and Marciano's record pages the scores are in the proper order.
From Walcott's page:
| referee: Charley Daggert 7-4 | Zach Clayton 8-4 | Pete Tomasco 7-5
From Marciano's page:
| referee: Charley Daggert 4-7 | Zach Clayton 4-8 | Pete Tomasco 5-7
------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT IF WALCOTT GETS UP . . .
he of course loses the round making the scores, going into the 14th round, thus . . .
5-7 ::: 5-8 ::: 6-7
If Marciano wins both the 14th and 15th rounds then the scores would be . . .
7-7 ::: 7-8 ::: 8-7
It would be a Split Draw and Walcott stays champion; too bad he was unconscious.
------------------------------------------------------------------
BUT WAIT . . . if this was New York, when the rounds come out even (and only when they are even) they then add a bonus point for a knockdown, which means Marciano would have gotten an extra point for the round 13 knockdown . . . but then again Walcott would have gotten a bonus point for the round one knockdown, so I guess it's back to being a Split Draw.
Besides it was in Phily, not New York; I don't know if the same bonus points rule applied in the State of Pennsylvania.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
P.S. Someone might want to challenge my math, I'm high on weed.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 06-19-2020, 05:36 PM.

I had dozens of 8 mm castle films back in the 70’s. I remember bringing a highlight reel of Louis fights to school and showing it to friends in the library. They never saw anything like it. Everyone erupted when Louis koed Walcott with a fuselage of rapid fire combinations.
