That fight is wonderful as it separates the wheat from the chaff. Anyone looking at that fight and calling it "fixed" is implicitly stating their incompetence and inexperience; thus excusing themselves from ever holding an opinion to be taken seriously.

Johnson was 37, "well out of his prime, fat, and dissipated" as Jack Curley put it.

Yet he was still winning the fight easily before all of that and the heat caught up to him.

How can you be "winning the fight easily" and still not have put your opponent away after TWENTY-SIX rounds!?!?!?

THe photos show he wasn't old and fat. He just din't know how to fight a man his size, or bigger.

Maybe against old Middleweights he looked like a champion, but when he had to face another Heavyweight he looked pedestrian.

Why bother to win an argument on internet ... On the net, I've been called everything from a lunatic to schizoid. It means, people have spent their precious time reading my posts. A victory in itself :-)

John L comes on here, after reading some BoxRec articles, and starts pontificating. When people try to explain to him why he is wrong, instead of trying to discuss the matter, he digs his heels in and makes even more out-landish claims.

There's an old saying, "if everyone is thinking the same, it's a sure sign someone isn't thinking." The Israeli Military requires someone be assigned the role of providing a dissenting opinion. It's good that we have different viewpoints and opinions. ANd while you should be able to speak convincingly, the goal of us being here isn't to convince others. It's not that zero-sum. Of all the heavyweight champs they impress me the very least. The glass chinned brawler and the stick and move boxer with a 72 inch reach, neither of them seem like they would have been champions in another era.

Patterson came along in a time where the heavies were getting bigger. Prior to that, it was common for many heavies to compete as light heavyweight and heavyweight. Archie Moore was reigning light heavyweight champion while being a top 10 heavyweight contender.

But Ali and Liston ushered in a new era of heavyweight. I call them both the granddadies of modern heavyweight boxing. Unfortunately for Patterson, there wasn't yet a cruiser weight division. But he did hold his own with the big boys. He was only stopped by Johansson, Liston and Ali. He avenged the loss to Johansson 2x and he was giving away about 20 pounds to Ali and Liston and 30 pounds in his second fight with Ali.

Patterson was one of the best 175-200 pounders to ever lace up gloves.
