Tyrell Biggs .Did he achieve his potential ?

    Thrice national amateur champ.
    world champ.
    Olympic champ...all as amateur.
    as pro..won first 15.
beat Tillis , Sims, Snipes, Bey.
Lost to peak Tyson ,then unbeaten Damiani on a cut , then unbeaten Gary Mason . Then had winning run including Ocassio and unbeaten Marin.Lost to unbeaten Bowe in a thriller before career spiralled .Still only lost to good fighters like Tubbs ,Hunter ,unbeaten Mathis,Donald.
He put drug issues behind him to build his pro career.Always looked very fit but didnt seem durable .Lacked real heavyweight power but had stacks of talent and courage.Popular view is his camp rushed him.Anyone any views on this intriguing fighter ?

if lewis would have pressed him in the 84 Olympics tyrell may have faltered but he had the experience to outpoint him. just did not have the tools to hold off tyson when mike was mike. he may have been champ in a weaker era

Possibly no. But, then in hindsight, maybe we overrated his potential. A lot of great amateurs can't make the translation into great pros, i.e Howard Davis Jr, Bernard Taylor.

I agree.I think he took his ability as far as he could. He just wasnt enough of a bruiser and a tough guy at the high end.Ive read he was a wasted talent but i dont see what more he could have done.He was matched real hard also.

Yes. I believe he went as far as his talent allowed him.

One of the hardest things about evaluating talent and weakness is knowing how and when someone should step up. Take guys like Morrison and Vargas. both guys were brought along slowly and carefully matched on the way up. Sometimes its still not enough though. With Vargas many people at the time still felt that he was rushed against Trinidad and consequently ruined. Sometimes its all a matter of bad choices... Juan Ma was very poorly matched against Orlando Salidad for example. Salidad was just too strong for juan Ma and it may have destroyed his career.

With Biggs, and with the heavyweight division in general, if one can have a chin it can be a bit more forgiving, but if they knew about Biggs they probably should have avoided Tyson...then again its easy to second guess lol.

              Good points.
Think the problem was Tyson was the only real big payday available.Biggs had proven himself against the second division fighters and it was time for payday.I also think they genuinely thought he had a chance.I dont think the fights he took after Tyson helped. He could probably have outpointed a Berbick but they put him in with sluggers , i always felt he wasnt matched well.I thought he got himself back together well for the Bowe fight, he gave it a hell of a go but came up short. For a guy who looked so fit his stamina was strangely poor.In the Tyson fight the plan was to stick and move but after round one he said he couldnt keep it up and after round 4 he told his corner his legs had one.Against Gary Mason he was ahead on points but suddenly ran out of gas ,he shouldve won that fight. He relied heavily on his jab and didnt throw enough right hands behind it.He showed against Bey that he had a right hand but it didnt get much use after that ! His one armed win over Jeff Sims after a broken collarbone early on was something to his credit though...i could never figure out why the crowd always seemed against him ?

Amateur boxing and pro boxing are almost two different sports...the pro boxer skillsets favor power outside amateur boxing rules.Tyson is a good example of this, since he struggled though imop won most losses.Speaking to my former manager who had over 100 amateur fights actually today said he would have not lost the 3 fights on his record in pro boxing compared to the rules in the amateur levels.

Simply put biggs was not a pro style fighter I think.more point scoring, run, dodge ,tag.....I do think he may have donme better in the previous eras but didn't really have the fire power to win top class which was long boxer style 80's HW's then. Tyson was just a disaster waiting to happen....he carried biggs the entire fight up until he was bored and fel;t he punished him enough.

                  He was a bum.
Never made any ripples in the heavyweight pool.
I never saw him do anything special, gifted, or top class as a pro

Yes, he was nothing. Did not have the genes to handle hard hits to the head.
