Yeah, Lampley's a Cotto cheerleader. That's not one of the cases where he's being a company man IMO. Lampley really likes Cotto, although it still doesn't match his man-love for Barrera.

In Lampley's early HBO days, a really biased performance was the first J.C. Chavez-Meldrick Taylor fight. That was just horrible.

Back on what I said earlier about them trying to make fighters stars, and their commentary showing this...I just rewatched Garcia-Khan. Khan was dropped at the end of the 3rd and again early in the 4th. Khan, despite being hurt, was fighting back and even landed a couple of nice uppercuts, although Garcia was still clearly getting the best of it.

Lampley exclaims "Khan has taken over!!"

I would say Lampley's commentary in Barrera-Marquez is the most biased I've heard him be. It actually puts me off rewatching what was a very good fight.

        The fight doctor.

Just talks way too much for me. Makes my appreciate Dunphy all the more.

I think it took him about 4 replays to admit that Barrera hit Marquez when he was down.

I don't think Lampley has ever been more biased in favor of a fighter as he is for MAB.

I can really tolerate any boxing commentator but if we are talking about sports overall, throw in Joe Buck

If we're going outside of boxing, that smug prick would get my vote.

Outside of boxing, I always found Joe Morgan really dull. I mean, he knows the fundamentals of baseball, but there was no excitement in his commentary. Ditto for Bob Costas. If you see a slugfest, a big knockout win or game winning home run, you should at least sound SOMEWHAT excitied. Jon Sterling here in New York has much better energy calling Yankee games on the radio, but has really lost it the last few years as he's gone WAY too far with catch phrases and the need to try and come up with clever nicknames for the players. It was one thing to occasionally hear The Bamtino or Bern Baby Bern, but now it's just excessive with The Grandy Man, El Capitan or the worst, saying he sent a Text Message when Mark Texiera hits a home run or "you're on the Mark Texeira. Suzyn Waldman is horrible too, love it when Opie and Anthony, as well as Craig Carton made fun of her.

Man, I'm glad I mostly watch fights and New York Giants games these days. Bob Papa is just average on HBO's Boxing After Dark, but is much better doing the Giants games on the radio here in New York.

Just out of curiosity, what has Joe Buck said that sounds smug? I only used to see him a little during Yankee playoff games. I found him dull as well.

And as for annoying, Chris Berman on ESPN baseball games, also a need for clever nicknames, along with **** Vitale. Loved it when O&A interviewed him years ago on satellite radio and had him thinking they weren't on the air yet, so the listeners could get an idea of how different he was on and off air.

Its funny you should mention Morgan Anthony... Lets just back up a bit though...I believe it was 73? I could be off....You have this incredible Boston Red Sox Team that would to my mind have beat many of the better teams of the era, and I say this eating bitter poisin as a yankee fan having to watch gabe Paul's yanks being eaten alive pre steinbrenner. And wouldn't you know it? that year as if the gods of baseball had to have the last say: the national league comes up with a team for the ages...the big red machine...those baesterds made me root for the red sox because they were the closest I had ever seen to an unbeatable team. And on that series went...Eventually the reds were just a little better. Never have I seen a world series with two more skilled teams, the series went 7 (if I remember) and it ended on a wimper (a fly out to the field).

Now heres the thing: The Red sox were funny, burleson, yaz and that pretender Carlton Fisk (Munson was the best rip champ!), these guys had personality and I grew up hating them but respecting them...they were FLESH AND BLOOD...Human!! Like the Irish Boston Fans yelling "Nettles sucks!!" So it was a visceral thing...fistfights in the stands, cutting school to go to the ballpark and sneaking in....visceral, human, fallible....

I tell you this: That Big Red Machine was reptilian! Not flesh and blood, perfect, unbeatable, boring, never an error, never missing a clutch hit, winning games by a mere run but dominating... CYBORGS!!! I HATED THOSE GUYS!

And the second baseman for that team was Morgan...Typical in his excellence, consistancy, so good as to be boring boring boring. I played ball in Brooklyn in the league that birthed another decent second baseman by the name of Willie Randolph... So of course I was a fan of Willie, but Morgan? again....perfect. Boring, always found a way to hit the ball properly in a clutch. Bucky Dent was a fvc up at times, but he also put the ball over the Green Monster at Fenway....and Burleson? the man was a trip, looked like he came out if an 1800 photo of the nationals! You would have to search far and wide to find a guy who was as consistant and reliable as Morgan, and many of those guys from the Big Red machine.

I noticed what you said about Morgan and it does not suprise me one bit, that whole team was like that actually. bench had personality I guess...but again my boy Munson was...aw heck!! I can't say anyone in the modern era played the position better than Bench, see what I mean? Im talking before the era where free agency became the way teams are formed....

Great Reds team for sure, just as many rank the 1976 Reds as the best ever as well. I still say the Yankee teams from 1927 or 1998 would at least have a good shot of beating them in a best of 7 series though or at least the 1998 team. I don't care who the Reds have coming up to bat, you bring in Rivera in a save situation and he is mowing them all down. That's why they called him Mo. They had clutch hitting as well, getting big hits against Cleveland to beat them in 6 and Brosius homering off of closer Hoffman in the world series. Starting pitching would be close, especially if El Duque is on his game and I give Pettitte, Cone and Wells a good shot too. Clutch hitting is good for both, so the Yankee bullpen might be the difference.

Morgan may have been a great player, but was dull as a commentator, along with Costas and Buck and Berman and Vitale would be the most annoying.

agreed, I would also throw in the Oakland A's team during the late 60's...Great team indeed. Morgan was dull as a player also! those guys never dropped the ball, or failed to get the hit needed.... I stopped watching baseball when the modern era of free agency made a situation where a team of ringers could be bought. Also Baseball is such a mess now that usually the weaker teams get hot in the playoffs and win everything.

Remember the series where the Cardinals played the royals and the rotund first baseman (Balboni) who hit like 201 for the year went on a tear and won it for the Royals? (Palm slap) that did it for me. The modern era has great players and ****ty teams.
