Billy fought started as a welter and moved through the divisions fighting very good competition but having a very low ko ratio. After winning the lhw he fought heavyweight comp and proceeded to stop half of his opponents. He also staggered Louis and made the fatal mistake of trading and although leading on the cards this change in tactics enabled Joe to stop him. My question is why did Billy stop his heavy weight opponents at a higher clip than the lower division's?

Conn was a teenager at lightweight (16 & 17) by the time he was 19 yrs he was at middleweight and at 21 was fighting at Lightheavy. Got a title shot at
22 yrs old and thats his title beginnings. He always could punch well but when your a kid fighting men your power doesn't always come through.
He had NO amatuer bouts that I know of and lost half of his first dozen or so fights. He learned quickly however and took on some very seasoned fighters at a young age.
He was an outstanding boxer by the time he signed to face Louis.
He got greedy for a second with Louis and the lights went out!

indeed that would be a fight! Tunney was smart enough not to do what Conn did but I will not second guess one of Pittsburgh's greats. Conn had every right to aspire to be the best he could....Yet? in my mind Tunney would have avoided that fiasco.

I doubt big Gene would have much need of his chin. Scuffin' Joe was that slow on his feet. With those feet he will need arms like Plastic Man that can stretch across the ring to hit Gene while he is still in his corner. The marine has too much mustard gas for Joe, and may even foam him out, if the likes of Schmeling can do it.
