Camacho had the much better career and would dominate Cotto head to head.

Scary how similar the two are. Camacho fought in an era where you didn't cry about catchweights or mandatories. In his day he was a special breed of fighter. He had way underrated defense. I admire his courage against higher level guys, but Cotto's been able to sustain his post-prime status and still remain relevant and unless he beats Martinez, Floyd or Manny I have to call this one a draw.

H2H I dare say Camacho outpoints him, but not every time

What i love about Cotto is how he shows off his range. Even when people ridicule him....he went into boxing mode against Mosley and had the confidence to do so. Cotto is physical but not like Margarito who always seemed to look for validation through getting smashed up albeit less then the other guy. Cotto also has an inside game and made life more than a little unpleasant for Mayweather inside at times.

I love this section here because of observations and more than a few posters here have observed that while Cotto does not have the natural attributes of many ATG's he has been able to be succesful with a solid, well practiced, well thought out game plan. Cotto works hard and when a fighter learns the value of technique they can fight better in the twilight of their careers. I put Cotto in this category which includes guys like Winky, Hopkins and Toney.

Alas....for the gifted life in the ring is more complicated though! Oscar Wilde wrote a short story about a man who was equally talented as a fighter and as a violin virtoussa....This man's conflict was to choose, and for the gifted fighter the conflict is often how to develop an approach that will sustain one through all phases of a career.

Camacho had a mecurial career and life...Jones never really recovered his form after Tarver called him and laid him out...

Ask yourself a question: Would you rather be a guy like Cotto, Hopkins, Wright, or a guy like Jones or Camacho? The saddest thing to me is how Camacho like Jones, had to trade his greatness in and in so doing made other fighters, who could not carry their jockstrap when they were prime, look comparable. With Jones this was the Calzaghe fight....Joe mocked Jones and made him look silly when in reality Jones would have made easy work of him....Ditto for Hopkins who was beat fair and then allowed to claim a victory under different circumstances.

With Camacho this also happened late in his career...I believe it was Chavez (De La Hoya also?) and some others who were allowed to beat on a running Camacho...Naturally people then said Camacho was all flash and a runner conveniently forgetting that when in his prime Camacho was a boxing marvel.

The price a shining star pays, as the French say "such is life such is war and the women are expensive" (se la vie se la gere le femme son chere).

Cotto wins a by decision. Cotto can fight different fights with different styles and would come into the fight with a good game plan.

Good observations but I would class those guys, particuarly Toney, as more naturally gifted than Cotto. They all have naturall faster hands, better power, and do things like hold their balance and form better than Cotto does, especially when he gets pressured/ tired. Good fighter though Cotto, I think in the tougher eras at WW he would have been a highly rated contender who may have just fallen short at championship level.
