    Alis chin overated?

Ali could defintly take a punch but did he have one of the best chins of all time? He rarely took any clean shots to the chin and when he did he was floored and the left hook seems to be his weakness, that shot could land because he dint have his hands up and it impacted his head more than glancing overhand rights. Also seems to be a mixture of his heart and intelligence, that kept him from going down and kept his opponents from knowing he was hurt. Even though Ali got hit in the foreman fight, the headshots he took were absorbed by the gloves and the rope a dope and nothing really accurate, if foreman landed clean I think ali would be out. Personally I don't think his chin was close to the guys like mcall, holyfield, big George, chuvalo which makes him greater than he already is

He got hit quite a lot IMO.

He didn't get hit much in the 60's but definitely in the 70's.

Even then, Liston landed some clean shots on him and was never hurt. Cooper obviously hurt him but that was perhaps the sole time in the 60's.

The shot that Frazier put him down with in the first fight would have taken out most and Ali got straight back up. He took a hell of a lot of punishment in the first and third Frazier fight alone.

Earnie Shavers landed a shot that would have taken out most on Ali and he took it.

Foreman landed some damaging heavy blows.

Larry Holmes put an absolute beating on him and he stayed on his feet.

I would say Ali's chin isn't overrated. It's one of the best of all time.

This can't get any dumber, can it?

I expect it from him, he tries to stir the pot but hasn't the background to do it! Anyone who doesn't think Ali had one of the best chins ever needs to "go away"! please. Ray

lol I did start by saying he can defintly take a punch because he has a great chin, I just think naturally guys like holyfield, chuvallo, mcalls were made of iron and ali should be credited more for his heart, intelligence and will to stay on his feet

              I'm not sure.

I can't see Ali getting stopped by Bowe nor can I see Holyfield taking the punishment Ali did in his career by the punchers he did.

I've seen Ali ship far too many revolting shots....particularly in the 70s (and rather too many against Holmes and Berbick in the 80s too) to convince me that his punch resistance certainly deserves to be ranked amongst the very best.

The left hooks he shook off from Joe Frazier in rounds 5 & 6 of the Thrilla in Manilla, the freight train right hands from Shavers (round two), some serious meat from Ken Norton in all three fights.... Ron Lyle landed clean too.

Between the beginning of 1964 though to the end of 1981 Ali was only once dropped with a head shot (the pulverising 15th round left hook of Frazier). He was up straight away!!!

If that isn't a great chin, what is?

maybe put it this way, if you could put alis head on chuvalo, holyfield or big George, do you think he could take the shots they took, particulary in their solid stance coz I think alis stance also helped him out when taking those big overhand rights. Take foreman vs chuvalo, could you see ali taking those shots from that stance, I just don't think his physical head was better than those guys
