Thanks for the info. Do you think that these fights not happening was due to the fact that Roy was not interested or due to his management? I remember watching a documentary or something on him and that he tried to be self-managed or something for a large portion of his career and some people thought it was detrimental.

I can't speak with any authority about that, but some of these fights should have gotten made. Roy was not an easy guy to get a deal done with. Thats not to say all of these fights not happening is his fault, but he didn't seem to go out of his way to make the best fights possible.

Roy did what he did because he could. He could get a truckload of cash from HBO regardless of the opposition, because Jones himself was the overwhelming star attraction. He could command these gigabucks because of the huge sympathy he gained from the scandalous Seoul olympics and because of his TV-friendly style.

I wonder if he today regrets not having fought some of the obvious deserving opponents that he never faced.

Absolutely. And I know these guys were better than many of the guys Roy chose to fight. Do you disagree?

Why would Roy Jones consider moving down to 168 (as undisputed champ at 175) to fight an unproven champ not even considered the best in his division (Calzaghe)? Think about it for a second. You do realize that Calzaghe was the equivalent of William Joppy then, right? No hindsight here...just think about it.

We'll get to the other names in a sec.

First of all... he fought and beat Bernard Hopkins AT middleweight.

Hopkins went on to be undefeated for the next 12 years AFTER he lost to Roy.

Then he moved UP in weight and fought and beat the BEST fighter in the division at the time in James Toney, some of his title defenses may have left something to be desired... but in his very first fight in the division, he beat the best fighter and moved up in weight to do it. Toney was 44-0 and top 3-4 P4P at the time.

Then he moved up in weight again to LHW.

Ring Rankings at Light Heavyweight in 1998 before he unified all 3 belts.

                  1. Roy Jones Jr.
                  2. Dariusz Michalczewski
                  3. Reggie Johnson
                  4. Graciano Rocchigiani
                  5. Lou Del Valle
                  6. Eric Harding
                  7. Montell Griffin
                  8. Michael Nunn
                  9. Antonio Tarver
                  10. David Telesco

At his stint at LHW, he fought 6 of the top 10 fighters in the division.

Ring Rankings at Light Heavyweight in 2003 his last year as Champion.

                  Roy Jones Jr., Champion

                  1. Antonio Tarver
                  2. Julio Cesar Gonzalez
                  3. Dariusz Michalczewski
                  4. Glen Johnson
                  5. Eric Harding
                  6. Clinton Woods
                  7. Silvio Branco
                  8. Montell Griffin
                  9. Richard Hall
                  10. Mehdi Sahnoune

By the time he was done with LHW, he ended up fighting 7 of the top 10 ranked LHWs.

Then he moved UP in weight again... he fought a HW title holder as a cruiserweight, being outweighed by 30lbs, and grabbed a HW title.

Then he moved back down to LHW... and fought the #1 rated LHW in Antonio Tarver.
Then he fought him again, then he fought Glen Johnson, then he fought Tarver again.

EVERY single fighter in history of boxing has fought and whooped tomato cans, Roy isn't the only one... but his resume isn't all fluff. He fought and beat top ranked fighters and champions in every weight class he was in.

I think it would have been more interesting to have seen them fight at a catch weight between 2000-02. It certainly would have been better than some of the fights he had. But you're right, that is hindsight on my part.

No you wouldn't have because back then, you weren't thinking about Calzaghe. The muthaphukka going life and death with David Starie .

Calzaghe was a paper champ not even considered the best in his division. An unknown until about 2002. And no, it wouldn't have been better then the fights Jones had because back then, NOBODY thought Calzaghe was better than Lou Del Valle, for instance. Can't use hindsight here, my friend.
